MANY ENTRIES TO THORNTON STAKES. Always an important feature of Oakland racing, the Thornton Stakes has been vested with Increased favor in the eyes of owners by the advancement of its added money to ,000, a doubling of its previous endowment. The result Is a Teally remarkable entry to a race of "its long distance of four miles, fifty-five nominations having been made. The winner this year. Big Bow. is.ono of them and. to addition, such really high-class horses as Pinkola, Gowan, Go Between, Lawrence P. Daley, Dorante. Montgomery. King James, Tony Faust, Nealon. Uncle. Meellck, Downpatrlck, Firestone .and Big Chief have been T entered. .Besides these stars such .other less noted but useful racers as Belmere, Philander. Missouri Lad, Watdr" Lake. Arcourt. Lo-gistilla. First Peep, Joe Coyne. Milford. Clamor, Red Leaf, Nadzu, John Louis. Miss Officious, Cloyne. Goldway. Livius and Ramus figure as a group most likely to furnish the runners and possibly the -winner. AYith additional nominations to be made, fifteen days before the race. It is patent that the Thornton of - " 1909 may be contested by the greatest field numerically that has ever gone to the post iiKthls country for a race of four miles. The conditions of the race and the nominations are as follows: The Thornton Stakes For - three-year-Olds and upward at time of closing. 00 to start: 0 forfeit: ,000 added, of which ,000 to second. 00 to third, the fourth to save starting fee. Four-year-olds to carry 100 lbs.: five-year-olds, 10S lbs.; six-year-olds and over. 110 lbs. Winners of a stake other than selling at two miles or over this year, to carry C lbs. extra.
