On the Trot TrotBy By MORRIE KURLANSKY KURLANSKYIHHA IHHA Reinstates Four Members James Takes Up Entries Problem Review Futurity Shatters Record RecordMAYWOOD MAYWOOD PARK Maywood 111 June 8 The Illinois Harness Horsemen Asso ¬ ciation held a meeting Saturday noon in the clubhouse here which was attended by a good number of horsemen presently racing in Chicago President Jimmy James told the assembly that the four members of organization who were barred from racing at Sportsmans Park on account of differences that arose last year over the matter of purse distribution had been reinstated according to word from Jerry Baier direc ¬ tor of racing at the Cicero oval and entries of these horsemen would be accepted Since the four horsemen in question had entered several horses in the stakes series at the coming Sportsmans Park meeting and had had their entry fees sent back to them the problem now is whether the four may race their horses now in the respec ¬ tive stakes although their charges are not paid up James took the matter up with Edward Hackett legal counsellor for the USTA and a solution may come about next week As it looks now all horsemen having horses entered in these Sportsmans Park stakes must consent to let the horses of the formerly ousted trainers and owners start without having the stakes payments made Besides these technical problems questions pertaining to purse distribution were discussed and the consensus seemed to be that better purses should be given to better horses horsesPresident President James commented further on the very favorable impression the all out racing this spring has made on the Chicagoland public as reflected in the rising1 mutuel handle He said further more relations with management here the Illinois Harness Racing Commission and the USTA are very amiable and the organization is recognized for having the best of the sport at heart heartTwo Two of the four traditional Grand Cir ¬ cuit harness racing events sponsored annu ¬ ally at the Illinois State Pair by the Re ¬ view Futurity Association will carry rec ¬ ordbreaking purses this year That was made known today by H J Schmoeger association president who made the purse record prediction after scanning the en ¬ tries filed by horsemen from Maine to Cali ¬ fornia According to Schmoeger The Little Pat Stake for twoyearold pacers to be run August 20 will be worth 22500 and the Review Futurity threeyearold Pace August 20 will carry a 15000 purse Each figure is a record The other two association sponsored races The Grey ¬ hound for twoyearbid trotters August 20 and the Review Futurity threeyear old August 19 will carry healthy al ¬ though not quite recordshattering tags The Greyhound will be worth 21000 and the Review Trot 15000 15000Since 15000V V Since 1894 when the first Review Fu ¬ turity was raced the stakes sponsored by the nonprofit Peoria group have taken their places among the best known and most important Grand Circuit events Coming as it does just after the Ham bletonian week at Goshen N Y the Springfield meeting sets itself up as a natural proving ground for those horses who came into the spotlight at Goshen and who can help seal national honors by winning their division of the Review Futurity sets The Hambletonian field for instance goes in the Review three yearold trot The Review Pace is a ma ¬ jor Little Brown Jug preview and three of its recent winners Forbes Chief Good Time and Tar Heel have gone on to cop the Jug that same year The twoyear old events The Greyhound and the Little Pat many times produce winners that later gain national fame Among the wellknown Greyhound graduates are and Duke of Lullwater Little Pat win ¬ ners who later gained wide recognition include Ensign Hanover Good Time Tar Heel Poplar Byrd and Thunderclap ThunderclapWhen When starter John Dale came out for the parade for the first race Friday night he encountered trouble with his starting gate Fortunately though there was no need to revert to the oldtime starting method of scoring which might have kept the spectators out of bed until the wee hours Dale has an auxiliary gate handy for emergencies like this one and the pub ¬ lic never noticed a difference in the start ¬ ing automobiles automobilesBilly Billy Rouse employs the tallest man on the grounds His name is Dave Prasser and he is six feet six inches The tall groom who takes care of Curly P Grat tan a winner of two races this year is said to be the original Mutt of the wellknown cartoon Mutt and Jeff Horses starting from an outside post position fare better here when there is an off track trackTom Tom Mills ownertrainer of Filet Mig non and others is a nonsmoker buys chewing gum however wholesale Glen Hawkins is suffering from a stubborn cold and grounded himself for several days Jack Friedley departed for Bay State Race ¬ way Fpxboro Mass over the week end while Roy Getman returned with a trio for his patron Albert Friess of Rice Lake Wisconsin
