JOCKEY W. SMITH IN TROUBLE AT OAKLAND. Puts Up a Faulty Ride on Theo Case Del Fountain Shows Losing Tickets. San Francisco, Cal., March 5. Jockey W. Smith was disciplined for his faulty ride on Theo Case, favorite in the fifth race won by Buchanan. Del Fountain, owner and trainer of the horse, was exonerated, he having satisfied the stewards of the loss I of heavy wagers. The days racing at Oakland commenced inauspiciously for the talent. Peerless Lass and Sylvia Talbot, both prohibitive favorites, lamet-.ibiy failed their backers. There was plenty of rejoicing during the remainder of the afternoon, as public choicos came to the fore with satisfactory regularity. . Jockey L. Williams has been ill again. It is said that he indulges too often in the flowing bowl. Jockey W. Davis returns to New York March 20. He has been re-engaged to ride for A. J. Joyner during the coming season on Metropolitan tracks. Jere Dunn is seriously ill. He has just undergone an operation for .cancer of the throat and is in a bad way.
