CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE SUBURBAN HANDICAP. The first Suburban, won by General Monroe in 1SS4, had but ,500 added. It is different now so far as money is concerned. However, at that time ,500 added was considered a munificent endowment and owners responded so eagerly to the inducements of this rich new stake that twenty horses went to the post. To show that the handlcappers of that time did not in the. least fear to put high weight on good horses, George Kinney ran fifth in that Subuiban with 132 pounds up and Barnes, his stableraate, also ran unplaced with 131 up. Furthermore, this pair coupled was the favorite at 2J to 1. General Monroe himself carried 124 pounds, but seven pounds of this was penalty, his original assignment having been 117 pounds. He was a great old horse, by far the best son of Tom Bowling. He came out to Chicago the same year to the inaugural Washington Park meeting and got licked by Frceland and Audrain in the Columbia Stakes at a mile aud three-quarters, but carried off the Washington Park Cup at two miles anil a quartet in great style. Subsequently the added money was raised to ,000. Then in 1SS9 It was made a 0,000 guaranteed slake. In 1892 and 1S93 it was of the guaranteed value of 5,000, its high, money mark. In 1S91 it had 4,000 added. In 1S95 it was cut down to ,000 added and was worth only ,730 net to the winner, the least valuable Suburban ever run. Its next change was to a 0,000 guaranteed race. In 1903 this figure was doubled and since then it has remained a stake of the guaranteed value of 0,000, its condensed history being as follows: Year. First. Age. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Age. Wt. Third.
