BOOKMAKERS AT SEATTLE. Among the bookmakers at Seattle are .Too Harlan, William Engstrom, Ed Sonle, K. Veiller, Billy Ayers, Dave Argyle, Clancy Brothers, Hoffman Brothers, Puerl Wilkerson and Harry Froehlieh. The Seattle Post-Intelllgencer says Froehlieh reached Seattle from San Francisco last Friday "with an , army tent and a pair of army blankets for each ; member of bis crew. He went through the earthquake and for seven weeks slept under canvas. He t got used to the game and likes It so well that he now insists on pitching his tent somewhere near 1 the track. He refuses to sleep under a wood roof, and during the meeting will have his abode in the ttnt." The same paper commenting upon the open ring at Seattle says: "An open betting ring, that thing so long wished by the sporting public of this city, lias at last become a reality. The days of Hard Losing Jones and those of his ilk, racing men say, are done. However, there are those who say the business will not thrive here unless the syndicate ring is established. Last year and oilier years the bettors were forced to put their money down against a book that was classed even by those who followed the ponies and who are used to the game as a cinch. The advent of Hard Losing Jones came a couple of years ago and like sheep the other bookies followed his prices and the public bet money at outrageous odds. Jones is a tiling of the past now and any honest bookmaker who is willing to undergo the conditions may cut into the ring and hang up his slate."
