FIVE FAVORITES ARE FIRST AT LATONIA. Big Crowd Enjoys the Sport Nicol Rides Threa Winners John Carroll Is Beaten. Cincinnati, O., July 7. The attendance at Latonia today, in view of the fact that there was nothing particularly attractive aliout the card, was surprisingly large. It was withal a pleasure hunting crowd and they seemed to have found what they were looking for, and dollars In addition, for five favorites were successful. Jockey Nicol returned from his brief visit to Chicago this morning and rode three winners. He might have had another had he been willing to hazard the rather uninviting opening that was afforded in the final furlong of the handicap race. However, he didnt take the chance and John Carroll, counted best by the speculators, finished third to Braden and Lady Esther. The defeat of John Carroll was a disappointment to the followers of the Corrigan colors, but there was some salve in the fact that la the previous race Alma Dufour had scored brilliantly, running the mile in l:39j. Only sixteen bookmakers drew In at todays allotment of stands. This was a decrease of four. Four field books were also In line today. There Is considerable complaint from speculators over the failure of most of the books to accept wagers of any consequence at the prices quoted ou their slates. The judges started an investigation today of the running of Harefoot in the steeplechase of yesterday. Among those quizzed was trainer Pierce, who has the horse in charge. He stated that Harefoof ran his best races with light weight up and also added that the horse bled badly on his return to the stable. J. H. Baker will ship his stable to Fort Erie tomorrow. C. Gill, now at Kenilworth Park, has wired for stable room here. Debar was worked after the last race three-quarters in impressive style In 1:14.
