ALEX SHIELDS GETS STALWART AND HERMIS. Jays 11,000 for Former and ,000 for Latter-Yearlings Bring a Low Average. New York, July 7. Following the sale of yearlings at Sheepshead Bay today Hermis, Stalwart nnd Advance Guard were sold to dissolve a partnership, between Edward It. Thomas and Alex Shields. Mr. Thomas owned a half interest in Hermis and Advance Guard nnd a three-quarter interest in Stalwart. The sale paddock was crowded when the horses were led Into the ring. The first horse was- Hermis, for which Mr. Thomas paid 1906.sh0,000 and the opening bid was ,300. It rose steadily until Hie figures reached ,000 when the one-time champion was knocked down to Alex Shields. The good performer Stalwart, was the next and the horse looked grand. The opening bid was ,000 by Shields and with A. J. Joyner as a contender, the figure reached ,000 and T. C. McDowell made jt .,000. Another hid of ,000 and then William Wallace said 1,000 at which price the Meddler Jiorse was knocked down. Wallace -acted for Alexander Shields. The last of the trio was Advance Guard and, starting with a bid of .00, the price rose to 1.500 at which price A. J. Joyner secured the old Champion long distance racer. Yearlings from the Kindergarten and Melrose Studs, and other breeding farms to the number of thlrtv-one were sold. Prices ruled very low, the lot bringing ,125, or an average of .02 per head.
