MATINEE RACING AT HURRICANA, It is a custom of the Messrs. Sanford to give a series of matinee racers on the training track at Iliirricana Farm several days before they ship their horses to Saratoga each year, and the occasion is a gala affair for the Mohawk Valley horsemen and their friends and neighbors. The fourth running of these matinee races took place recently and was participated in by the horses which are expected to develop into the stars of the Sanford Stable during the remainder ot the turf year. "The Sahfords have an attractive little racing plant at Iliirricana, wifli grandstand, steeplechase course, and, in fact, all the conveniences necessary, and at the last matinee It is estimated that a crowd of ten or twelve thousand attended. Ah Interesting feature of the matinee was the par.t played by Mohawk II., tiie star two-year-old pf last summers Saratoga meeting, and .which Is expected by the folks in the valley to throw clods in the eyes of the best of bis age now In training. Mohawk II. was started In the fourth race, a slx-fiirlong dash. He was ridden by a youth laboring under the picturesque name of "Scotty" McQuatters. Evidently "Scotty" didnt know how to. handle Mohawk II. for, just as the barrier arose, the colt reared and plunged and shied . across the track, leaving the race to be won by Johnstown from the other starter, Ravena, both of which are considered among the best in the Sanford Stable. The farmers near Saratoga and Amsterdam have been talking about Mohawk II., watching his work and saving up their small change to bet on the colt ali spring, and they were lined up by the hundreds to see him race. Their disappointment when he failed to get away was indicated by a big slwut and advice to Mr. McQuatters to "glddap" anyhow. Four otherthree-year-olds which arc expected to brtng-glory to the purple- ami gold, m KteMVslW Htr - JTrTsh Girl iitMllcTifr-and Amstel.TOsirGirl" II. never raced before the matinee .and there was all kinds of whispered and mysterious information a-lmzz that she was about the fastest thing that ever stepped. But she, too, acted badly at the post and lost to Maicliff. There were four races on the flat at this matinee, and it is a fact worthy of note that every one of the winners is by Clifford, one of Mr. Sanfords most valued - stallions. The winners of the two slx-furlong races for two-year-olds were Daunscara and Neoskaleeta. The hitter Is a stylish black filly, out of Garoga, and she had no trouble in winning from Roadway, Stanwix and Port Jackson. Mr. Sanford has no jumpers in the stable, but to add variety to the matinee, he arranged for a steeplechase over two nilles and a quarter and sent for three "leppers" from Saratoga. Sacandaga, a Hurrieaua-bred horse, by Royal Emblem One-I-Love, and a half brother to Mohawk II., won after an exciting race from West Galway, another llurri-cana-bred horse, and Margaret, owned by the veteran cross-country rider and trainer, Pat Meaney, of Saratoga. This race Is called the Iliirricana Hurdle Handicap, and there are twelve hedges in the two miles and a quarter. Tlie parade of the stallions of the Sanford Slud was the cause of much cheering. These sires are Chuctaiiumla, Clifford, Rocktou, Potomac, Isidor, Royal Emblem, Herefordshire Swell, Nabob and General Harding.
