THE DEEDS OF MOHAWK II. The Sanford crack Mohawk II. Is expected to be one of the star attractions of the nearby Saratoga meeting. Having been In retirement for a year he has in a great measure dropped from public view and some account of his performances last year is in order. His racing career was a short one. He started but four times and won three races. That Is not a very extensive record, but the Saratoga Special and Hopeful Stakes were Included In his three victories and after he won the latter event many were disposed to consider hliii the best two-year-old of the year. That may well Ic doubted, but he was a big, line colt of great speed, taking action and gamecock courage and it Is to be hoped that as a three-year-old he retains the form that won him fame as a two-year-old. He is a chestnut in color, by Rock ton La Tosea. The latter was one of the finest race mares that ever graced the American turf. His first start was in the Flash Stakes, at five and a half furlongs on the opening day of the Saratoga meeting. He was green and ran unplaced.- Burgomaster won In a canter with 125 pounds up. Mohawk II. carried 117. Gallavant was second arid Vendor third. The track was slow and the time 1:082. Ills next race was for a purse, August 3. Tills he won by three lengths, with Juggler second and Bellsnlcker third. Belmere was a 6 to 5 favorite and ran-unplaced. The time was 1:08. Redferu rode and Mohawk II. was second choice at 3J to 1, backed down from 5 to 1. Two days later he won the rich Saratoga Special. The Whitney pair, Baltlcaxe. and Ironsides, started favorite at 11 to 51. Mohawk II. was second choice at 4 to 1, He won by a head from Voorhees In 1:07 with Tangle a close third and gaining rapidly. The other starters were Accountant, Battleaxe, Blair Atliol, Bill Phillips, Onklawn and McKIttredge. It was a capital performance, but tarnished by the impression that Tangle would have won if .off reasonably well. His last race was for the Hopeful Stakes, at three-quarters of a mile. This race was run August 12, and he was so penalized that he bad to carry 130 pounds. This and the Impression that his success in the Saratoga Special was largely a matter ot good luck, served to make him an outsider in the betting, he going to the post with 0 to 1 quoted against him. The other starters carried 115 pounds. Mohawk II. ran in second place to the stretch and then forging into the lead, won by a length In 1:13, putting up a magnificent performance that won him hosts of friends and admirers. . .Athlete finished, second and Juggler third, heads apart. The other starters were Pegasus, Bellsnlcker, Oyama, Sandy D., Shlneon, Belmere and Meteor. Injuring himself slightly in the race the colt was retired for the year and his record was as follows: . Starts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Amt 1 3 0 0 1 3,540
