GOLD LADYS SUPERB SPEED TONY ASTES FILLY DEFEATS DANDELION FOR THE OCCIDENTAL. Gravesend Track Record FaMs When She Wine Huge Betting Coup Coupled with Her Victory Many Upsets. New York, September 20. Gravesend racing today was conducted under favorable conditions, a good track, -clear cool weather and the usual bis attendance being features. The racing was of high class, and :the main item on the card, the Occidental Handicap, was marked by one of the best races of the year, the crack filly. Gold Lady, triumphing over Dandelion, but being forced to break the track record to vanquish the good son of Hamburg. Both the winner and the second met early interference, a circumstance rendering their respective performances more meritorious. A lmge betting coup was brought off by Gold Ladys victory. Tony Aste and his connections backed the Ally to win a fortune, and, notwithstanding that she was interfered with at the start, the race was afterwards run to suit her, and she made good in bewildering fashion. Tour horses were left at the post in the third race. Rose White, backed down from long odds, swerved in front of Father Koffee, Wise Child and Blacksheep, hitting the entire quartette out of commission. Jockey Henry fell from Frank Lord while the Jiorscs were at the post for the last race, and was .so hurt tjiat Chandler had to be substituted. This caused a delay injurious to the more heavily weighted horses, and beyond doubt had its effect on the favorites, Jack Atkin aud Veil. Then Lad of Langden by crossing put a number of the horses out of commission. He was disqualified and his rider, E. Dugau, was fined 200 for rough riding. An utfset marked the finish of the first race. Marbles was an odds-on favorite, but Marbles is erratic and a dangerous proposition when at a short price. Martha Jane, at 5 to 1, took the race in a close finish with the 15 to 1 shot, Winning Star, witli Marbles a bad third. Winning Star came east with the private reputation of being n good filly, but prior to today her running has been poor. The filly Night Mist, ran well enough here to suggest an early win. With firmer tooting to ran over, Sheriff Williams .showed decided improvement and won all the way in the steeplechase. Knight of Elway showed a consistent performance in running second. Somebody made a mistake in backing Pagan Bey heavily, lie running a faraway last and never encouraged his supporters. The withdrawal of Uncle from the third race so obviously gave it to Nimbus that he went to the post an odds-on favorite and won without difficulty. The outsider, St. Hario, ran a good race and out-linished Aunt Hose for second money, a hard endeavor to race with Nimbus costing the filly second place. The Occidental Handicap was productive of a fast-run aud interesting race, in which Tony Astes Clold Lady gave further evidence of her excellence by defeating such a llyer as Dandelion. Kentucky Beau sot a terrific pace for seven furlongs, then gave it up. Gold Lady, close up from the start, then went into the lead and at the end of a rapid stretch sprint, won by better than two lengths in Mich fast time as to break the track record for a mile and an eighth. Under an energetic ride Dandelion made a grand stretch effort, but the disparity in weight was too great and he could only take second place. Ampedo ran a surprisingly good race and managed to head McCarter out for third money. The latter ran a great race under his heavy impost and Is in prime fettle.
