FAVORITES FAIL AT HAMILTON. Hamilton, Ont., September 20. The card at Hamilton this afternoon was made up of a series of overnight events, In. which evenly balanced fields went to the post. Spirited racing was in order and although but one favorite won, still, little fault could bo found, as the best horses finished in front of their fields. The biggest disappointment of the day was the poor showing of Restoration In the sixth race, which was won by Peter Knight. Caper Sauce, with J. Daly in the saddle, proved an easy winner in the first race. Halfcaste and Ayr Water had the early speed, but in the stretch run both tired, and Caper Sauce caught up and passed them without an effort. When Mulcahy drew his whip on Ayr Water at the eighth pole, the latter swerved across to the Inside and crowded Halfcaste. Murphy claimed foul against Ayr Water and it was allowed. The change in placing gave second money to Halfcaste and third place to Clean Sweep. There was another disqualification during the afternoon, which came with the running of the third race, in which Officer was set back for interfering with Perfector in the stretch run. Perfector was closing strongly at the end when Connelly deliberately pulled across to the inside and shut him off. Jockey Liebert arrived here from New York last night and will remain for the balance of the meeting. He will ride free lance.
