HOW OLD LOGAN CHANGED QUARTERS Illustrating the late Alex Shields love for a good horse, a Canadian writer and friend of the dead turfman, tells this story. One day Shields came to me In a hurry and inquired: "What does an express car cost from St. Louis?" "About 300," I replied. A few days afterward I learned the sequel to his question. He had loaned his great old stallion, Logan, to a horseman, who kept a farm near St. Louis, and had been told by a friend that the old campaigner was not being used properly; in fact, was scarcely being given -enough to eat. Mr. Shields was mad all over when he heard this, for Logan had won a lot of races for him aud had been the corner-stone of the Shields stable. So he wired the American Express Company at St. Louis, and had the horse shipped on at once by express. From that day until the present, Logan has had the best stall at the Bound Brook Farm in New Jersey, and will be kept there as long as he lives.
