EL CUCHILLO, THE JUMPER. After Coligny, the AVidener steeplechaser, wliich won the Champion Steeplechase at Belmont Park the last day of the recent meeting, had demonstrated to Mr. AVidener and the manager of the stable, Howard Lewis, Jr., two years ago that lie would make one of the best jumpers in the country, they set their hearts upon finding, and securing, if possible, a full brother to Coligny, which was racing at St. Louis as a two-year-old named El Cuchillo. It was finally brought to their attention that EI Cuchillo was at Latonia and Lewis went to Cincinnati from New York with Mr. AVideners check for ,000 and instructions to buy the colt If there seemed any possibility of making a steeplechaser out of him. Before Lewis reached the track EI Cuchillo had won a race and his owner, E. Parks, was not inclined lo sell him as he had been the trainer oC the colt from his first start and thought well of the horse. Parks finally agreed to take ,200 and Lewis forthwith produced the ,000 check and offered his own for the remainder. Parks did not care lo accept the cheeks of perv sons unknown lo him and it was only after the two had visited the oilice of Secretary Dillon and Lewis was vouched for, that the deal was closed. El Cuchillo was immediately shipped to the AAMdener farm near Philadelphia, lie has run all of his races for WIdener in the field ami it would take many times the price paid for him to induce Mr. AVidener to part the two best horses full brothers -in his stable. In connection with this lilt of history it is not amiss to brielly sketch the racing career of El Cuchillo. The bay horse, now a Dve-year-old, by Carlsbad LOrient, made his first start at Union Park, St. Louis, May 4, 1904, as a two-year-old and finished second to Henry A? Schroeder, which lias since become a steeplechaser. El Cuchillo, in ills six other races which were all run at Union Iark in the name of E. Brown and Co., was only once unplaced. In that race, June 23, he was left at the post. The following sprlug El Cuchillo was bought by E. Parks, who was his trainer when a two year-old, and only starteil three times, once at St. Louis and twice at Latonia and his last race on the fiat was at this track, October 31, when he won a mile and an eighth race in 2:05j from a moderate field, on a muddy track. It was his previous start, October 17, which enabled Mr. AVidener to locate the colt. Last year El Cuchillo ran four races, but. did not win one. His first start bearing the scarlet and white stripes and black cap was at Gravesend, June 20, 1900, when he finished third to Thomas Hitchcock, Jr.s Oro and "Mr. Cottons" Delcanta. He finished second to his stable mate, Long Run, in the Rockaway Cup at Sheepshead Bay, July 3, and in his third race finished third again, this time to Bound Brook and Oleroso. His last performance for the year was in the Shillelah Steeplechase at Saratoga, August IS, when he was beaten by Grandpa. The brother to the winner of the Champion has run three races this year and won all of thein. The first was the Empire State Steeplechase Handicap at Gravesend, May 25; the Greater New York Steeplechase at the same track, June S, and the last when he won the Saratoga Steeplechase at the Spa, August 5.
