ONE THAT HOLDS HIS OWN AMONO SPRINTERS. H. R. BRANDTS TOM MGRATH, B. G, 3, BY SAIN MISS MARION. Many Chlcagoans who formerly patronized the local racing will have recalled to memory a horse that was of much the same general conformation as Tom McGrath and as they view the picture of the latter in this issue will strive mentally, to. identify the other horse. To say that it was Ruddy Bros. long-necked giraffy horse Fayette will fjurnish the animal of comparison and apparent outward resemblance. However, Fayette was a stayer, while Tom McGrath Is a sprinter and a hard one to beat. His first start was at Kinloch Park, April 2S, 1905. Here, for a purse at four and a half furlongs, he ran second to Hamilcar. His first winning race was at Memphis, June 19, when, in a half-mile dash, he defeated Colonel Jewell, Tomochichl and four more two-year-olds in 501, carrying 112 pounds. At that Memphis summer meeting lie won in all four races. Afterwards he took one race at Dclinar Park and late in December won two at Oakland, all purse races and some of them ordinary selling races against very low class opposition. Up to this time Tom McGrath had made no great impression, but early in 1900 he began to force himself into recognition. At Oakland, beginning January 1, he won fo;ir races in quick succession. The first three were for purses in which he beat good horses. In two he ran three-quarters in 1:13 and 1:131 respectively. The fourth was the Adam Andrew Stakes, at six and a half furlongs, in which he defeated such fast ones as Princess Titania, Red Leaf, Fustian, Bob Ragon, Sir Brillar, The .Mighty and six more in 1:20". This race was run January 13 and was his principal monetary success, bringing ?3,G70 net. He won one more race at Oakland and was brought east to the Memphis spring meeting, where he won two races, was second in one and unplaced in one. His successes were a purse, in which he beat Van Ness, Money Muss and six more, and the Tennessee Brewing Company Stakes, which he won from Lady Ellison, Macy Jr., Broomhandle and live others. He only ran twice after the Memphis meeting and was unplaced in a nrce won by Theyre Off at Shcepsheatl Bay and wen a purse at Gravesend from Sly Ben, Listless and ten other starters. This year Tom McGrath has been quite successful and up to date has won ten races out of sixteen starts and, in his present good form, is likely to win several more before the year expires. Ills record in all now stands as follows: v Vst. Age. Sts. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unp. Amt. won. 1905 2 19 7 5 3 4 $ 2,370 1000 3 14 S 1 3 2 8,400 1907 4 10 10 2 2 2 7,270 Totals 3 49 25 S 8 S S,100
