OPENING DAY AT OAKLAND GREAT ATTENDANCE, A FAST TRACK AND EXCELLENT RACING. Jack Nunnally Defeats Montgomery in the Opening Handicap Ed Ball in Form Magazine Makes" Good. Oakland. Cal.. November 0. The New California Jockpy Clubs seasnn of winter racing began here today under exceptionally favorable conditions. It was thought that the scarcity of money would seri ously affect the race track, and it was a matter of wonder to the majority" of the 10.000 and odd race-goers who tilled the beautiful Emeryville in-closure this afternoon that the reverse was the case. Clearing house certificates for sums ranging from ?20 down to as low as ?2 were freely accepted by the layers from intending bettors. The card was excellent and contained at least one stake feature of merit in the Opening Day Handicap at one mile. AH records in the matter of attendance, number of layers, class of horses engaged, and general public interest manifested for the sport on previous opening days were surpassed. The presence of S. C. Hildreths great wo-year-old Uncle frightened out so many eliglbles to the big race that the field dwindled down to eight starters, one of which was an added one. There was general disappointment when Uncle, the principal magnet of attraction in the race, was withdrawn, and the hopes of the stable intrusted to Montgomery and Veil. These two, coupled as the Hildreth entry, started favorites at almost prohibitive odds. The race resulted in a huge upset, victory going to a bush horse and an extreme outsider, Jack " Nunnally, at 30 to 1. The race was not truly run, the winner being especially favored throughout the running and in addition actually impeding Acrobat, the --second choice and menacing contender, In the final sixteenth to such an extent that he. was prevented from winning. Montgomery and Veil were beaten by the start and, in the case of the forme, a palpable lack or condi-tion. The tabled history of the Opening Handicap is. as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val.
