I I c 1 i i 1 HORSES GO FAST AT SANTA ANITA. Rifleman Easily Defeats Edwin Gum and Colonel Jack Attendance Good. Los Angeles, Cal., December 12. Ideal racing conditions and a good program brought out the largest crowd of the week today. The time made in several of the races was remarkably fast, especially as , the track was not at its best, not having thoroughly dried out from the soaking it got Tuesday night. The feature race of the day, the fifth, a handicap for three-year-olds, was marred considerably by a poor start, Holtman, allowing Botanist, the decided choice, to beat the barrier flying by two lengths. The Hayman colt had things his own way thereafter, but George S. Davis closed up ground so gamely in the final eighth as to lead one to believe that witli an equal break lie might have won. Rifleman made those he was pitted against in the third race look cheap. He simply overwhelmed Colonel .Tack in the final eighth, winning with ridiculous ease. The twelve books had ample business, the betting being just about able to support .that number now. The victory of Belarius in the last race saved the pencilers from a good drubbing. J. A. Bennet got in with a. carload of horses today from San Francisco.
