HILL TOP WINS TARRYTOWN DAUGHTER OF CLIFFORD TAKES STAKE FEATURE AT EMPIRE CITY. Stanley Fay Carries Top Weight to Victory in Handicap Field Stand at Saratoga to Be Opened for Benefit of Up-State Folk. New York, July 21. Tho Tarrytown Stakes at u mile, for three-year-olds exclusively, under selling conditions, proved a gift for Hill Top at Yonkers today. Excepting Lawton Wiggins, tin opposition on paper and in reality was weak and f-ven the Planudes colt seemed unable to extend Hill Top at any stage of the running. The purse was wortli ,040 to tlie winner. Stanley Fay. however, was the bright and particular turf luminary of the afternoon. Walkers diminutive, hut shapely racer, carried top weight of 1112 pounds to a gallant victory In the mile handicap, which was the best racing feature of the program. He defeated the lightly weighted and suddenly rejuvenated Tony Bonero by a head in tin: last stride of an intensely interesting and exciting struggle. The narrowness of the winners margin of success was due to his propensity for loafing when he has his opponents beaten, and had not jockey Powers lieen alive to the situation in the final sixteenth, Stanley Kay might have loafed into a tluke defeat. The forward miming of the western mare Zieuap, which finished third, evoked comment. The short history of the Tarrytown Stakes is given below: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1907 Old Honesty..:! 117 J. Lee.. ,020 1:402 1908 Frank Jill... 4 120 Notter... 2,280 1:47 1909Hill Top 90 MeCahey.. 1,040 1:40? For three-year-olds exclusively. With the exception of Hill Top, the successful favorites during the afternoon were of the lukewarm kind and receded in the betting, while the heavily and persistently backed public choices suffered defeat. The western horseman. II. 5. Bedwell. duplicated his success of the opening day by winning the first and last races with identically the same horses. Kiehard Heed and Hans. The formers imposition was so moderate that it became a one-sided affair throughout. It was just the reverse in the case of Hans. The latter displayed pronounced improvement over his preceding essay, in which he was t neat en bv such horses as Eschau and Rye. Some extremely heavy betting was indulged in today. The failure of Helen Carroll and Glennadeane in the "second and fifth races were especially costly to the big bettors. It is rumored that Chicago OBrien lost 0,000 on the pair. Mr. OBrien, remarked, after Glennadcanes defeat, that she had cost him over thirty thousand dollars in wagers in the short time he has owned her. It is asserted on good authority that Senator MeCarrens losses on Tuesday exceeded 0,000. Much of the big wagering takes place in the clubhouse. Messrs. Francis Hitchcock, H. K. Kuapp. and other stewards of the Jockey Club are in constant attendance at the races these days and are watching the conduct of the sport with the keenest of interest. One high ollicial remarked after the races today that a law should be passed making the "doping" of race horses a penal offense. Fighting Bob, winner of todays fifth race, has all the earmarks of a Derby horse, experts say. He is a big. awkward youngster that will improve into a top-notcher with more racing. The Saratoga Racing Association will open the fieldstand for the benefit of visitors from nearby towns, to whom the admission would be a hardship. A. !. Rlakeleys apprentice jockey. Glass, is on the ground under suspension by the starter for three ilavs. Glass will not ride any more at Yonkers. but will be sent to Saratoga forthwith.
