; ; WINNERS OF THE GREAT FILLY STAKES ; : Stakes for fillies exclusively have always been of moderate value as compared with those, for- both sexes. In an effort to provide one for two-year-old fillies that should rank with the greatest-events of each year the Coney Island Jockey Club founded the Great Filly Stakes. At first its purpose was realized, Its lirst winner gaining the big sum of 3,975 for her owner. But since then,- for one reason and another, the Great Filly has declined in value until this year only approximately ,000 is to lie the winners portion, not at all bad in these days of decreased values, but slight when compared with the sums that have fallen to other winners of the event. In its first running, bookmaker L. M. Myers filly. Leonora Loring, won narrowly from W. C. Whitneys Blue Girl, but a protest was lodged on the ground of incorrect entry under the lilies and a day or two after the race it was announced that the protest was good. Leonora Loring was disqualified and Myers, who needed the money, had to endure the anguish of seeing it pass to Whitney, who did not need it. It was one of the most notable cases of disqualification in American turf history. The record of the race is as follows: War. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Val.
