COLONEL JOT STAKE WINNER OUTSIDER IS SUCCESSFUL IN THE HURON AT BLUE BONNETS TRACK. 1 Deceptive Going. Makes Picking of Winners Difficult for Montreal Public Hasty Agnes Vanquishes Lawrence P. Daley and Others in Handicap. Montreal, Que., September 7. The Huron Stakes, for two-year-olds, which featured todays card at Blue Bonnets, proved a rattling contest and aroused considerable enthusiasm. The nine starters at one period of the running were in almost perfect alignment and continued so for nearly a sixteenth of a mile before spreading out. The finish resulted In a half-length victory for the fast-closing Colonel Jot. which came with a cyclouic rush through the final three-sixteenths, after having been a distant trailer In the early stages. Iulka beat Inflection handily for second money. Because of fast trials and previous good showings, Alfred the Great was considered best of the starters, and he encouraged his backers by leading at a fast pace for the first half mile, but he retired after straightening away fOi." the stretch drive. Fine weather brought another big attendance anil the different races furnished better sport than had been anticipated. The" deceptive going, however, made the flicking of winners a difficult proposition. The handicap at seven-eighths, in which only, four started, with Lawrence P. Daley regarded best, was taken by Hasty Agues. She showed the most speed from the start, but began tiring near the end, and Royal Onyx almost got up to beat her. Lawrence P. Daley ran disappointingly and finished far back, principally because of bad handling.: The steeplechase over the long course was a spectacular duel, between Impertinence .and Caloora- hatchee for the first ten jumps, but thereafter Impertinence drew away, only to make a bad landing and unseat her rider at the fourteenth jump. Impertinences elimination made, it easy for Byzantine to rush into the lead and Win as his rider pleased from the outsider. Caloorahatchee. Vaquero, a strongly supported second choice, was never a serious contender, but landed third by virtue of Impertinences mishap. Sam Louis Kid repeated Ills clever victory at Fort. Erie by snreadeagling a good band in the opening race, in which he ruled favorite. The second race attracted unusual Interest from the fact that all the starters were Quebec-owned and mostly locally. It resulted iii a victory for Adoration, with Martha Jane second and Silk Hose third. Adoration. Martha Jane, Blue Coat and Colored Lady, though owned by different interests: had to, be grouped in the betting because of being, trained by A. Bulcroft. In the closing dash Goes Fast, the favorite, was1 beaten in the last few strides by Wool-stone. Jockey Hinciicliffe, on the former, lodged a claim of foul against the winner, but the stewards would not allow it. " Jockey J. Reids apprentice allowance expired today. P. T. Chinn purchased the horse Mazuma from J. Hewitt today. Brunhllde, which started in the opening race, made her first appearance under colors since she was cut down at Latonia. She favored the injured leg somewhat. Edward Tribe, who is assisting starter Dade here, will leave on Thursday next for Denver. Col., to do the starting at the coming meeting at Overland Park. Jockey Fj. Taplin has fully recovered from his. illness and resumed riding today.. He has several engagements for tomorrow.
