; THIS IS ST. LEGER DAY OVER IN ENGLAND v Tliis is a great racing day in England. The one hundred and thirty-fourth St. Leger is. to lie run over the broad expanses of tile Doncaster Town Moor and King Edward and everyone else who can will be there to see it. The St. Legcr is the oldest of the classics of the English turf, having first been run three years earlier .than the first Oaks nnd seven years earlier than the first Epsom Derby. It is of the same value as the Derby, each being now guaranteed races at 0,500 sovereigns, or approximately .2,500. The St. Leger is run over a course that is officially described as being of "about one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards." It is not only a big thing in a racing way to all England, but it is an especially big thing to the town of Doncaster, which owns the race track, furnishes the money to be run for, takes all the receipts and derives an ample profit from the racing, which is applied to defrayment of the various corporate expenses of the town. The St. Leger of the present year Is, by common consent, deemed a three-horse race, with Bayardo, Mincrn and Louviers deemed almost sure to be placed horses, but this will not prevent eight or ten more from going to the post, one of which will probably be Mr; Keenes American-bred chestnut colt, Esperanto, ly Disguise Anomaly. Like nil other races, the St. Legcr has been marked by stunning surprises to overconfident backers of what seemed public form, but it hardly seems probable that anything of the sort will occur this year. The most experienced judges hold that Bayardo will win, the only qualification being that In some quarters doubt is expressed as to his staying the route, this being based on his breeding instead of anything that has cropped up in his racing. He has a formidable opponent in King Edwards Derby winner. Minora, which colt, from all accounts, is thriving lustily and is as good as one of the foremost trainers of the world can make him. In fact, one thing that must conduce to a capital race is the remarkably good condition and health of all of the probable St. Leger starters. At latest advices Bayardo was an even money favorite, with Minora second choice at :: to l.and sixteen horses were expected to start.
