: : HISTORY OF THE CENTURY STAKES - The 0,000 Century Stakes of past years is no 0,000 race this year. Instead it is an overnight ,000 handicap, but at its former distance of a mile and a half. Like its companion, but longer-distance race.-the Annual Champion, it was established by tbe Coney Island Jockey Club shortly after the beginning of tbe pictent century and designed to bring the pick of our horses three years old and over in competition over a distance that would test their ability to stay, as well as to run fast. Its purpose was fully met and the .Century lias brought aliout great lacing, with such champions as Watereolor, Rockton, Blues, Watef-boy. Stalwart, Sysonby, Ballot. "The Picket. Ort Wells, Major Daiugcrfield, Broomstick, King James and Frank Jill In thrilling competition before delighted thousands. It has always been a fast run race and last year Ballot came within a small fraction of a second of wiping- out the long-standing Washington Park record of 2:3014, made by Goodrich in 1808.
