HANBKIDGE WINS -AT LAST RACER THAT HAD FREQUENTLY RUN SECOND FINALLY FINISHES FIRST. Bain Sets in at Montreal and Days Sport Winds Up with a Wet Track Selling Race War Continues. Montreal. September 10. Disagreeable weather marred todays racing at Blue Bonnets. Just before race time a light drizzle began, wliich culminated in a heavy downpour after the second race and continued throughout the remainder of the afternoon. Form calculations were upset by the changed track conditions, many of the smartly-backed horses being handicapped by the going and showing to poor advantage. The all-aged race at seven-eighths was the most pretentious offering of the afternoon, but when the rain came,, nine of the carded starters declined tlie issue, making victory for Hanbridge almost a foregone conclusion. He was the shortest-priced winner of the afternoon and probably the best supported. The selling race war inaugurated by n. G. Bed-well when he bid up Martin Doyle on Tuesday last, still continues, and two of tbe afternoons winners were raised over their entered selling prices. Tlie first run-up came with the victory of Fearnaught II. in tlie opener by a small margin over Pulka. He was in for 1909.sh00 and J. Hewitt, owner of Pulka. advanced him to 00, but failed to get him. Willlnm Walker took a hand in the bidding when he raised Snow Ball, after her victory. S2CO over her- entered price of 00. Tlie bidding- on Snow Ball is an echo of the selling-race controversy between Guy Gray and Walker at Fort Erie. Carthage was one of the disappointments of the day. He was never a serious factor. Johnnie Blake scoring over the "poorly handled Boserrlan. witli Grande Dame third. Golconda made a game effort in the closing dash, but was not good .enough to down Lexington Lady. The race for provlnce-bre.I horses attracted considerable local Interest, as ali the horses were owned by persons residing in Montreal. Lady of Mercia was much the best and had to be to win. as she was practically left at the post, due to propping as the barrier was released. She showed a high turn of speed. . wore down her opponents in the first three furlongs of the mile triti and. after gaining the lead, held her opposition safe to win with consummate case from Okis and Victoria. Dave nenry was among todays arrivals from Fort iErie. He announced that he had severed liW connection with the Schroiber stable and will probably secure several horses of his own that lie will train in future. Emperor William. Dr. Wald Briggs and Sager. of the Schreiber string that raced on the Canadian circuit, were shipped to New-York and Will bo handled in future by John Powers. The rest of the Schreiber string will be sent to Louisville to await the opening of Churchill Downs. Jockey Rettig arrived today from New York and will do most of the riding for Clint DeWItt. trainer of the Kenwood Stable; having severed-his connection with R. L. Thomas. Jockey Ilinclicllffe had to cancel his riding engagements for the day on account of illness.
