: : DEPLETED DERBY RACES OF THE PRESENT YEAR The list of races run in tbis country under the. name Derby bus been sadly depleted in the course of the last half-dozen years. In that time the greatest of them all and one of the foremost races of the world, the American Derby, has vanished from the racing, along "with such other annual events of high importance as the St. Louis" Derby. Tennessee Derby, Cumberland Park Derby. Crescent City Derby and City Park Derby, the decision of which each year was of absorbing interest to the people of the communities which were the location of their running. Of the remainder that were run this year the California Derby and Los Angeles Derby are slated for the same obliteration, unless, the courts come to the rescue of racing in California. The continuation of the Brooklyn Derby is a matter of doubt. Tbis leaves only the Kentucky Derby, Latonia Derby and the Dcrbys of Canada In assured further existence, quite a sorry advance showing for 1010. Of the Derby winners of this year, High Private, Joe Madden. Wintergreen and Olambala are all excellent race horses. It would be hard to say tlie like of the others and it is one of the racing perplexities of the year that such platers as Piute and Michael Angelo managed to finish in front of Olambala in the Canadian Derby, even though the weights were much iu their favor.
