RAINY DAY AT SHEEPSHEAD CHANGE OF TRACK CONDITIONS RESULTS IN 1 RIDDLING OF THE CARD. Prince Imperial Makes Unsuccessful Eastern Debut. Being Beaten by Livonia Fitz Herbert i Wins at Prohibitive Odds. Now York. September 10. Tlic card at Sheepshead Bay tills afternoon was run off in a pouring rain and on a track fetlock deep in sloppy mud. It was the first bad weather the meeting lias li.id to contend with. Wholesale scratching was indulged in. only three horses being engaged in tliv opening and closing races. While the Holds in the remaining four races on the program suffered from numerous withdrawals, they retained enough material to insure plenty of contention. The three-horse affairs, won resiectively by Fitz Herbert and Nimbus, were too one-sided to arouse much enthusiasm. Hildreths crack was favorite, at 1 to 15. while the victory of Odonis gelding upset the even-money chance. High Private. The champion three-year-old of the last California season ran far below bis best form even after making due allowance for the shortcomings of his jockey, who failed signally to keep him up to his work in the early running. Of the two handicaps, the Memories and the Promenade, the former was of overshadowing importance because, of the presence of Prince Imperial, acclaimed as the best two-year-old developed on tbe Canadian circuit tbis season. Prince Imperial made bis debut as an overwhelming public favorite on metropolitan tracks in tbe colors of his new owner, Robert Forsythe little, and there was much curiosity to see bow be would perform among the beat of the second-division juveniles that opposed him. Though beaten, tlie Orlando colt showed that he was a good horse, and in having to play second fiddle to Livonia ho was not a whit disgraced, for the Star Shoot lilly was by far the liest of her age ttn.l sex In California, and had boon specially in lined and prepared for the big betting coup which was brought off on her. No turf victory this- season was more easily achieved than Livonias. Shu was let. in under ninety pounds because of an indifferent showing in a race at Saratoga, which was her first and only start since leaving California until today. On that occasion Livonia was heavily bandaged and lier performance was in marked contrast to todays showing. To close observers stationed on the roof of the grandstand the winner appeared to have been the cause of the accident which befell El tin Iica.!. when be. was heavily thrown shortly after the start. It seemed for a time as if jockey Davenport had been injured by bis fall, but he subsequently rode High Private. , The second of tbe handicap attractions was chiefly remarkable for tbe brilliant form displayed by Firestone and the unusually lUieral odds quoted alKiut liltn. Notwithstanding his big burden of 121 pounds, the former Williams crack picked up the lightly-weighted pacemaker when Dugan asked him to anil came home in a canter four lengths ill front of Black Mate and eight lengths in front of such a pronounced mud ruuner as Aroudack. with only 107 pounds up. Exactly the same time 1:41 was made by both Firestone and Nimbus in their respective winning mile efforts. The former popular and valuable Golden Rod over the grass course was run as a cheap selling affair. The turf was not seriously affected bv the rain and, with the exception of Fighting Rob, the Held as originally named overnight started. The OBrien filly, Glennadoano. perfectly ridden by A. Walsh, secured an easy victory. The attendance was limited to the regulars.
