THE PORTERS SPLENDID RACE Easily Triumphs Over Exterminator in Harford County Handicap. Billy Kelly Defeats Sir Barton Large Crowd Sees Opening of Maryland Season. nAVBE DE GBACE, Md., September 11. The Porter, game little son of Sween Ballet Girl, running in the colors of John F. Schorr, but owned by Edward Beal McLean of Washington, ran one of the best races of his career this afternoon when he won the ,000 added Harford County Handicap, beating among others Willis Sharpe Kilmers Exterminator. The Porter was ridden by jockey Jack OBrien, who handled the horse with excellent, judgment. OBrien picked the best of the going from tin? start, moving up An the outside of his opponents rounding the first turn and when straightened out on the baekstrech he went after the leaders and forced a terrific pace considering the heavy going., Bounding the far. turn- Exterminator and Slippery Elm tired and The Porter, shaking off alj opimsition, drew away into an easy lead and at the. end won under restraint. The races were run over a muddy track and before one of the largest gatherings -that ever turned out at Havre de Grace. The Hip Hip Hooray purse, which divided interest with the "Harford County Handicap. proved an easy thing for Billy Kelly, which came from behind in the stretch run and easily disposed of his stable companion. Sir Barton, the latter making his first start since his defeat by Purchase in the Dwyer Stakes. Sir Barton did not appear ready fev a bruising race, for, having dis-playedva fintr nirn-rpeeTlln setting-"the earlv pace, he tired badly in the stretch and barely lasted long enough to save second place. Scratches were numerous on account of track conditions, but speculation was quite heavy and the sport enjoyable to the large crowd. The inaugural dash of the fall racing season in Maryland fell to Hasten On, from the stable of J. W. McClelland, the Great Britain colt easilv beating My Laddie, Bullseye and seven other juveniles. In the race through the field the Canadian turfman John I.umsdens colors were carried to victory by the good jumper Crest Hill, which was ail outstanding favorite. J. F. Sweeneys consistent plater Hauberk won his fourth straight victory when he easily accounted for the fifth race, a dash of a mile and seventy yards. AUDACIOUS FOR POTOMAC STAKES. Secretary McLennan received word this morning that M. L. Schwartz had decided to ship Audacious from Belmont Park to Havre de Grace to start in the Potomac Stakes, which will be featured here on Saturday. Harry J. Morris, the steward representing the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, left for New York tonight to attend an important meeting of that body. His place in the stewards stand will be taken by Algernon Daingerfield, who got in from Xe.w York this morning. Frank Capra. who made jockey Ensors engagements on the Xew York tracks, is hero looking after the interests of jockeys Metcalf and Bodriguez. Metcalf is under contract to Frank Shannon. C. J. Fitz Gerald will not be here until Monday. He was detained on account of officiating as judge at several horse shows in New York State. The Al Bohrbaek stable arrived from New York. They are in charge of that good horseman Edward Phalen and all are said to be in good condition. Jockey Joe Dreyer, who was recently released by F. I. Weir, is here. He will ride as a free lance at the Maryland meetings. William Garth has decided to ship the two-year-old Blazes to Lexington on Saturday to fulfill his engagement in the Breeders Futurity, which will be run at the Lexington track September .20. T. Daley, who arrived from Toronto yesterday, brings the report that Tommy Murphy, who raced the steeplechaser African on the Canadian circuit, has a two-year-old called Azrael. which he purchased at the Seagram sale last spring, which has shown three-quarters of a mile over the Hamilton track several . times around 1:13.
