CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF The improvements being made at Laurel arc now fast Hearing completion. The J. K. L. ltoss yearlings are the only thoroughbreds at present quartered at the Laurel track. W. R. Coes Shoot On is through for this year. The colt was cut down at Saratoga and will hardly race again before next spring. Horses are plentiful at Havre de Grace. It was necessary to exclude forty-eight horses from the entries to the third race of today. The Toronto Hunt Club will hold a one-day meeting next month. Three steeplechases and a race on the flat will be included in the program. Governor James I. Black of Kentucky, will be the guest of honor on the opening day of the Kentucky fall racing season at lexington Saturday. A number of the horses which have been stabled at the Fair Grounds, New Orleans, track all summer are now racing at the Donaltlsonville, La., fair. Among the entries to the Australian Spring our fall stakes is a half-brother to Cetigne, bv Tressady Pretty Nell, none too well named as-Saturn. Desert Golds two-year-old sister, by All Black Atirarius, is entered as Acacia and the great mares three-year-old sister as dOro. Bookmakers in conjunction with the totalizators are wanted by a section of racing men in South Australia, and a move toward the adontion of that idea has been made in the South Australian house of assembly. Recently a member gave notice that he intended to introduce a bill to amend the lottery and gaming act so as to provide for the licensing of bookmakers on race courses. The dual system is giving satisfaction in New South Wales. The Panthers two-year-old brother, Morganatic Marriage, for which 1,000 was paid as a yearling, had his first race in the Somerville Stakes, five-eighths, at Newmarket. In a field of fourteen he was at 10 to 1, but ran well, finishing third, less than a half length from the winner. Marshal Neil, by Neil Gow May Lily. The race is one to which Messrs. Tattersall give ,000, ami it is confined to horses sold by then! as yearlings at public auction.
