THREE GREAT ONES -FOALED IN 1867 Maygio B. B., Lonjjfellow and Enquirer All Famous in Racing and the Stud. Two colts and a filly, foaled in 1S07. became in time equine celebrities of the first water. The colts were sons of Ieamington and the filly bore a son to Leamington in her mature years which is on record as the only American-bred horse which won the Epsom Derby and the Doncaster St. Lcger. This filly was Maggie B. B. ami her son referred to was Iroquois. She was a fine race mare and when a two-year-old beat such smashers as Enquirer. Lynchburg, Hamburg by Lexington and Regent when she won the Young America Stakes at Nashville, Tenn. Good as siie was in racing, her enduring fame was won as a stud matron. In that capacity she ranks as one of the brightest ornaments of the American Stud Book. She was highly prolific and the dam of sixteen registered foals. Her sons Harold and Iroquois, by Leamington, and Panique, by Alarm, were grand race horses and her daughter, Jaconet, was the dam of the famous racer and sire. Sir Dixon, one of the best ever. He was a majestic big brown horse, a tremendous strider when fully extended and a racer of the first order. He was a great favorite east and west. He won the Saratoga Cup in 1S71 from the beautiful horse Kingfisher in a race in which Kingfisher ran the first .mile in 1:40, the first authentic instance of that time ever having lieen made in ii race. Being made in a race at a longer distance, It bad no place as a record. The next year lie journeyed east in .great state to meet Harry Bassett in two great races. The first was in the Monmouth Cup at Monmouth Park. New Yorkers were greatly excited over this race and a vast throng gathered to see Longfellow triumph with exceeding ease. Such tin outcome was not thought of by the eastern enthusiasts who made Harry Bassett a hot favorite and bet their last dollar on him. It was related that many had to Walk back to New York and it was a long and weary pilgrimage. The two great racers then went to Saratoga and met again in the Saratoga Cup. This, as was the Monmouth Cup, was a dasli of two and a quarter miles. This time Longfellow was the favorite, but he twisted a plate and broke down in the race, giving those who had stuck to Harry Bassett a chance to exult. Then Longfellow was sent into the stud and gained great and lasting fame as a sire of great race horses.
