I . . , Dominique, the Futurity Contender Peter Quinces Fine Son Bred in the Purple Eis Racing Performances Fine and Progressive Defeat Charged to Condition By EXILE How often am I told there is little in breeding, and this from those -whose knowledge of pedigree .and past performances can be but rudimentary. Assuredly no one can with certainty breed a race horse, but he can, if a certain plan be followed, beat the other fellows average all to bits. This plan, as I see it, is a judicious blending of the three lines of Herod, Mateheni and Eclipse. Up until this season the Commando sire, Peter Quince, has been noted rather for the speed of his get than for their endurance. A speedy horse himself in his racing days, Peter Quince won the Culver Handicap and other races and since his residence at the Ilartland Stud has sent forth such as the Breeders Futurity -winners Imperator and Luke, in addition to those winners on -the wing such as Bringhurst r Domino 23 j nimyar ........ 2 Alarm 15 E . -i i Hint 2 11 S f Commando .12 j Umvn 1K. lbJ1 I Mannie Gray J tEnquirer E g bay 1S9S . j .zzicT, ,. , on J . Please do not overlook the fact that Dominique is bred Eclipse to Matchem, his dam, Berry Maid, being a descendant of the blacksmiths horse, Melbourne, and liberal infusions of Herod blood are introduced by way of Flood. Glengarrys sire Thormanby, Flying Dutchman, sire of Vergiss Mein Xicht, Madame Eglentine, Queen Mary, Bav Flower anil Lady Hardaway; la fact, the Toboggan Handicap winner, Berry Maid, was just the sort to breed a good one to Peter QuinCe. Peter Quince himself is somewhat overabtlndantly supplied witli Eclipse strains, his dam Fair Vision, gnlndam Enchantress and great grandam Lady Love, all being of Eclipse descent, surely, it is: nothing more than common sense to put him to mares carrying the coarse strain of Melbourne close up in their pedigrees. Remember the fire and brimstone St. Simon scored his best successes off mares in whose pedigrees was found close at hand, the leavening, phlegmatic blood of Melbourne. Dominique opened his racing account auspiciously enough, winning a four and a half furlongs dasli at Belmont Park May 22, and followed this up by inflicting defeat on that speedy colt Paul Jones over the five-eighths course at the same place. A few days later, however, Paul Jones had his revenge when in receipt of three pounds. Something must have gone awry, for Dominique did not again appear under silks until the closing day of Saratoga, where on August 27, he just managed to last long enough to beat the fast finishing Cleopatra. My program note against him reads "stopping." Yes, he was stopping, but It "would now appear that this was due more to lack of condition than to an inclination to shirk the task imposed. Anyway, and the handsome, though ill-starred, SiHy. This season Peter has the Pimlico Nursery Stakes and Albany Handicap winner Kinnoul. as well as the frequent winner Phantom Fair, running for him. However, this time the pedigree and performances of the chestnut juvenile Dominique may prove of interest, for Dominique, on liis last appearance, September 3 at Belmont Park, yroved himself seven lengths the superior of the Champagne Stakes winner, Cleopatra. Truly a most meritorious performance, for Cleopatra, on account of her second to Man o War, beating Constancy in the Hopeful, must be classed as near to the top of the tree among the fillies, and in Dominique peter Quince has, perhaps, at last sired a colt possessed of the stamina requisite to hold his own with all comers in the stakes of 1920. his subsequent seven lengths victory over the same opponent is reasonably conclusive evidence of this. In Dominique may have appeared a colt fit to cope even with such an equine prodigy as Man o War. Dominiques dam. Berry Maid, besides winning the Toboggan, was also first home for the Beldame Handicap and other races, and is by Oddfellow, son of Barealdine and the" Oaks winner Geheimniss, dam also of Free Mason and the flying Omladinat by Rosicrucian. Oddfellow himself was no slouch as a race horse, his best performance perhaps being a third to Fitz Roya for the Grand Prix tie Paris. When standing for service at F. A. Forsythes Fountainblue Stud, near Harrodsburg. Ky., Oddfellow became noted as the sire of Fountainblue, Duelist, The Rush, Toureilne, High Private, etc., and his daughters, if proper care is exercised in their matins;, should prove invaluable as brood mares. Riibur., grandam of Dominique, was a daughter of the Cup horse, Bramble, the main connecting link .between the present and the Waverly line to Whalebone. Meriden,. dam of Uubus, won no less than twenty-eight races and her sire, the Black-Iock horse Billet, sire of Belvidere, Miss Woodford and Sir Dixon. Mercedes,- which follows, is by. Melbourne,- Jr.,- son of Knight of St. George and Melrose, ancestress of Eon, Eole, St. Saviour and Purchase, by Melbourne. Dominique is, of course, a member of the famous Dance or Galoyade familv and to this same Galopade trace many of the best which have ever graced the American turf, such as Hamburg, Domino, War Dance, etc. Let us hope, then, that in Dominique has appeared one which- will revive the rather fallen fortunes of this once great winner producing line.
