RICH PRIZE TO CONSTANCY Wins Impressive Victory in East- ern Shore Stakes at Havre. L Midnight Sim Beats Crank and The Porter in a Thrilling Stretch Finish, i HAVRE RE GRACE, 511., September 20. Commander J. K. L. Ross consistent filly Constancy scored an impressive: victory in the 0,000 Eastern Shore Stakes at Havre do Grace this afternoon when she wore Hobey Raker down in tlie stretch and won drawing clear by a scant half length. Hobey Baker set a terrific pace in the early running, but tired in the deciding drive. Grayssian and Wildnir, which finished close lip, ran well. Roth closed inimeus? gaps from slow beginnings, and on their showing seems they should make good three-year-olds. The attendance was the largest that ever visited Havre de Grace, the crowd numbering close to 10,000. The, Toboggan Handicap attracted nearly as much attention as the big two-year-old feature and it resulted in a remarkably fast run race, as well as a decided surprise in the victory of Midnight Sun by the closest of margins over Crank, with the public favorite, The Porter, third. The latter had all the bad luck of the race, met with early interference and, despite his heavy impost, put up a sparkling performance. However, his final terrific closing rush was too late to overtake the leaders. The finish between Midnight Sun and Crank was of the sensational order, the latter taking a slight lead near the end, but was unable to hold out. Leochnres .was nt- his best and easily beat J. K. X. Ross1 African Arrow in the Delaware Iurse after a fast run race. The steeplechase proved easy for Crest Hill, that good juniper winning as his rider pleased. Jockey !:. Ambrose was an arrival from Now York this morning. He announced that he would finish out the fall season on the Maryland tracks. Allan Rulcroft will ship Silk Bird and other Canadian-bred horses that he brought here from Montreal to Cuba next winter. The stable will remain for the other Maryland meetings. Xeddam will be sent back to New York tomorrow. The liorses owned by G. W. Loft have arrived at Laurel. The division of the stable that Max Hirsch brought here will be sent to Laurel next week, where they will be freshened up for that meeting. Steeplechase jockey M. OConnor, who recently was discharged from the service, came over from New York and will ride at the Maryland meetings as a free lance. Starter Miltons schooling list is growing every day, and about two dozen of the most unruly liorses on the track are schooled at the barrier every morning. Milton himself is at the track bright and early assisting in the schooling of those on the ineligible list. T. E. Crist nurcliased at private sale the promising two-year-old Sweet Apple of J. L. Murphy of Philadelphia. Among the distinguished arrivals who came to witness the running of the .0,000 Eastern Shore Stakes for two-year-olds were Seiior A. II. Diaz of Havana. Cuba, W. M. Salmon, owner of Ilobey taker, and Commander .T. K. L. Ross, whose big string includes many of the stars of the present racing season.
