MISS JEMIMA AND CLE OP A TRA FINE FILLIES OF THE WEST AND EAST CONSIDERED -BOTH BEAUTIFULLY BRED AND BOTH HAVE SHONE IN RACING By EXILE The dark brown and deer-like Miss Jemima came eastward to Saratoga with a most enviable reputation, enhanced by her East View Stakes victory at Empire City, and she straightway proceeded, on the opening day of the Saratoga meeting, to win in a good field the Flash Stakes. 127 pounds up, by more than a lengtii from Wildair and King Thrush. Such as Eddie Rickenbachor, Cinderella. Paul Jones and others in the field. Possessed of amazing speed. Miss Jemima led at a rare pace all the way, though I thought her straight, to beat Wildair at the end. The Saratoga meeting was well advanced before we were afforded another glimpse of the western wonder, her next appearance being in the Schuylcrville. Once again was she oft winging, leading the held for all her 127 omino 23 Himyar .2 E r Commando .....12 J J ..... ........ reter Pan .. 2 J bay Emma C j Darebin 14 M nay uui . 2 nermlt 5 j xewminster s R o S I. Black Toney, now standing for service at E. R. Bradleys Idle Hour Stud, is only n beginner at the sire game, but during his racing career was considered quite in the front rank among the three-year-olds of the west. His sire, Peter Pan, is a son of Commando .and one of the best bred of that horses sons, and whose dam, Cinderella, is by Hermit and which strains on his dams side to Mabille, sister to the Derby and Grand Prix winner, Cremorne. Valla, Miss Jemimas dam, imported not so long ago by Mr. Bradley, is by Gallinules son Fariman, winner of the Great .Lancashire Produce Stakes, Great Saplin Stakes and an Ascot Biennial. Galli-nule has been the champion English brood mare sire for" some time past and it would appear flint his sons take after him in ability to beget good brood mares. Gallinule, unlike his sire, Isonomy, is a chestnut. Ills coat coloring, as in the case of Star Shoot, being derived from his dam, a daughter of the greatest color controller of them all. Hermit. Farimans dam, Bellinzona, is by the rapid-fire Necromancer and ills graudam, Hasty Girl, dam of the bold Bendigo and the St. Leger winner Kilwarlin. Corcyra, Cleopatras sire, in Ins racing days as a two-year-old, scored meritorious victories in the Rous Plate at Doncaster and Middle Park Plate at headquarters, beating Stornoway and Kennymore. As a three-year-old Corcyra won four out of six starts, numbering among his successes the Newmarket Stakes, Ascot Derby and Midsummer Stakes, Ascot; also finishing second, beating Black Jester, for the Two Thousand. Corcyra is a brother to the fast Benevente. winner as a juvenile of the Coventry Stakes and Middle Park Plate, and is by the champion English sire Polymelus, winner of a Cambridgeshire, Duke of York Stakes and Champion Stakes, and is the sire of the classic winners Black Jester, Fifinella and Pommern. Cyllene, sire of Polymelus, won the Ascot Gold Cup and was twice sold for upward of 00,000, and now. if still alive, has residence in the Argentine. All of you know all about Maid Marian, dam of Polv-melus. and also dam of Marian Hood, whose yearling by Sunstar made 25,000 at the recent Saratoga sales, and whose daughter. Sunboniiet, won the Kentucky Oaks and Alabama Stakes only a couple of years ago. This also is the family of the Australian champion sire. Grafton, and of Barney Schreibers lifesaver. Sain. Corcyra is a member of the Old Bald Peg No. 0 family, so famous in the long ago as the family of Plenipotentiary, pounds impost until well into the stretch. Here, the also penalized Spinnway winner Constancy, suffering beforehand much interference, drew alongside only to succumb in turn to tin; sudden and unexpected rush of the leniently treated Homely, Miss Jemima having to rest content with third place. Opinions differ. For my part I thought the brown never looked quite so well; others insisted she was overdone. Anyway, she had all of her accustomed speed, but failed at the critical moment. No better success attended her effort on the opening day at Belmont Park, where, at the finish of the Tomboy, she was even beaten out of a situation. It is unquestioned that Miss Jemima is possessed of a marvelous flight of speed, but how far can she run? That is the all-important ouestion. Here is her pedigree. Whats its suggestion? be found in Vallas pedigree, for Macheath. sire of Padilla, is by the Derby winner and double Herod horse of 18l3, Macaroni, and this tiie British Queen branch of the No, 8 family. No matter what Miss Jemimas future career as a race filly, her coming value for paddock use is at once obvious, possessed as she is to a marked degree of that most essential requisite for a brood marc speed and exhibiting as she does the great brood mares strains of Hermit twice, See Saw, Parmesan, Queen Mary, Galopin, Cremorne and Flying Dutchman. Cleopatra, the chestnut daughter of Corcyra, must be accounted as having been foaled under an unlucky star, so frequently has "she found one just too good for her and her Champagne victory of. Saturday last was nothing short of exhilarating. Only on the previous Wednesday had she been most summarily treated by Dominique; her second to Man o War in -the running of the Hopeful most creditable; second to Dominique just nrior to this and before this again; second to Blazes for the Grab Bag Handicap. My word! Cleopatra is a game one to come back after all this and win the Champagne from a colt of the pretensions of Upset. Diomed, Phantom, etc. St. Gntiens sire. The Rover, is also a member, but for some time past 111 England it appeared as though the light of the No. 5 family was about to be extinguished: not so. however, in other parts of the world, for the 4.200,000 Botafogos sire, Old Man, is a member of this line, as are the Frenchmen Beaurepaire and Beauminet, and Ogden still plays a strong hand In tins country. Besides those good horses of recent years. Great Britain, Worth, Free Lance and Old Rosebud are all members of this fnmilj-. Pearmain, Corcyras lam, is by that extra good brood mare sire, Persiminon. Some day I hope to write you more on this subject of successful brood mare sires. It is the simplest task of all in connection with the breeding of bloodstock, this guessing of the horses which will turn out to be great brood mare sires. Cleopatras dam, Galilee, is a nIne-.year:old daughter of the splendid brood mare sire Gallinule. His daughters never fail you as producers, and the grandam St. Cecilia is bv Sain s sire. St. Serf, son of St. Simon, and whose dam, leroma, is by the "great brood mare sire Derby winner and Herod horse Thormanby. The more you have of this Thormanby strain the better, ? m?, ru,ls tIle Pedigree to Melody, dam of the One lhousand Guineas winner Winifredu. Melody Is -by tynedale. son of Warlock, bv Birdcatcher -.lee, by Adventurer. A good producing line surely and what a splendid mate is Cleopatra for some Herod or Matches sire, for in the blood of both she is slightly deficient!
