FINE SPORT AT FORT ERIE Close and Exciting Finishes Mark Wednesdays Racing. Petie, Sudor and Claymore Score by Inches Double for W. C. Weant. FOIJT KUIK. Out.. August 10. W. C. Weant played an important part in todays sport at Fort Krie ".hen he accounted for tw-y of the races with Vanessa Welles and Photoplay. Much interest was manifested in the running of the fourth race, which was for two-year-olds. A small field faced the starter, and Chninplaiii, on tlie strength of his last race at Hamilton, was supported with rare confidence. Photoplay, however, was not overlooked, and when the harrier was released it developed into a hot struggle between the two. Champlaiu was not good enough for the daughter of Atheliug II. and, after setting a fast pace for a half mile, was forced to relinquish tlie lead to Photoplay and, try as he did, could not displace her thereafter. The winner vSVv ridden by Iing, who used fine judgment. ClfuffiV plain appeared a trifle high in flesh and flineleRu..: when Ittitwell went to the whip, in the final driyjgf-Fast Trial was third, a long distance back. Another race that attracted considerable atten tion and speculation was the fifth, which brouglit. .together a well matched baud to go a .mile and ji; sixteenth, G. M, Hendrie,s CMuyniore -.pfp,tciJ-.- -Clean Gone after the hardest kind of a driveV-"wIth Padua taking the small iortion of the purse. The result was in doubt until the final strides. Clean Gone was going with every stride and only lost by inches. Todays racing was full of thrills and replete . with excitement from start to finish. Another crowd of goodly proportions was present and certainly was entertained royaly. A. Ii. Kirbys Pataud filly Petie ran a sparkling race to account for the opening dash .of the afternoon. Coming fast on the outside entering the stretch, after being outrun early. Petie in a fast closing rush caught and passed the leader in tin; last strides. Petie was the favorite and for a halt mile her backers apparently saw their hopes vanish in the cloud of dust from the hoofs of Crest-wood Ioy, which raced into the lead with the rise of .the barrier and held command until the last eighth. He was, however, no match for the game daughter of Pataud when the final test came, tiring badly and being easily passed by tlie winner and P.umpety P.uinps. The latter closed fast and just failed to overtake Petie, only u nose separating the pair at tlie end. WEAK HIDE BEATS CHIEF SPONSOR. Canadian-bred horses made up the field in the second race at three-quarters of a mile. It was considered in the nature of a duel between Sudor, from Commander Itoss stable, and M. P.reimers Chief Sponsor. Such it proved to be and the Itoss colt made amends for his recent defeat by the Itrenner crack. A fine contest it was and Sudor won in the last stride under Kricksons vigorous hand ride. Chief Sponsor was away first and set a fast pace all the way, but Parrington failed to do him justice when the real test came and as a consequence had to lower his colors to the l!n-; three-year-old. The winning margin was a norland, with riders reversed. Chief Sponsor would in all probability have won. Two long-priced horses in Vanessa Welles and Grutiuu flashed past the judges first anil second respectively in the third race, a dash of three-quarters of a mile for three-year-olds and over under claiming conditions.- Grntisin was the leader to the filial eighth, where lie gave way to Vanessa Welles, the latter coming through the stretch on the outside to get up to win drawing clear. Toe the Mark was the choice in this race, but lost all chance of winning by being shuffled back soon after the start. Frank Farrar reports that he has indexed St. Germain and would tiiru him out witli llinduostau till next spring. Jockey .7. McTaggart departed for his home in Ilaltimore for a few days and Claver left to rejoin the J. K. L. Itoss stable at Saratoga. Howard Oots left for Saratoga yesterday to attend the yearlings sales. On a ruling issued by the stewards today owner J. Kennedy is fined 00 for registering horses not on grounds and for the misuse of badges. J. 15. Dunn was also fined 0 for misuse of badges.
