MONTFORTJONESBIGSTABLE J ■ ♦ ■ Maryland Division Is at Louis- . ville, Totaling Forty-One. ♦ Trainer Kay Spence Reports All His Horses in Good Condition— Eight Whitney Representatives Coming. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky.. May 4.— The influx of thoroughbreds for the spring race meeting: at Churchill Downs began in earnest today when trainer Kay Spence arrived with twenty-two of the Montfort Jones horses from Maryland. With the nineteen head which have been here for a week, the com- i bined strength of the Jones stable here is c forty-one. The horses meant for immediate • racing will be quartered at Churchill Downs, . while the others will remain at Douglas 1 ark. In speaking of the Jones racers, trainer Spence said : "I am glad to get back on my native heath. My horses are in good condi- tion and I believe I will get my share of the rich stakes and purses hung up by the Ken- tucky Jockey Club. I am not sure about winning the Derby, but I have an honest I three-year-old in The Clown, with which I intend to take a crack at the big race. He ■ showed improvement in his races in Mary- land and I believe he is a fit colt now. Rock- minister did not seem to like the going at Bowie and Havre de Grace. At Bowie the soil of the course is not to his liking. I be- lieve he runs better in Kentucky and here it is I will take a shot at the Clark and Ken- : tucky Handicaps with the son of Friar Rock. My older horses are ready and the two-year-olds look as if they are due to start winning." Nothing sensational in the way of fast gallops took place at the Downs this morning. Prince Tii Tii showed a creditable three-quarters, going the first quarter in 29, half in 49% and three-quarters in 1 :15. Alice Blue Gown and Miss Muffins went together three-quarters, the first quarter in 21, half in 48Vfe, three-quarters in 1 :15%. Donegal worked three-quarters in 1:16, the first half in 49%. Blue Stone galloped three-eighths in 36. Flowers of Gold breezed five-eighths in 1:02, the first half in 49. UNITED VERDE READY. Whiskaway and United Verde, the C. W. Clark handicap candidates, showed a good mile. The pair worked the first quarter in 24%, half in 51%, three-quarters in 1 :18% and mile in 1 :44%. Whiskaway took the track kindly. It is doubtful if the Whisk Broom II. colt will be ready for the Clark Handicap, to be decided on the opening day of the Downs meeting. He is training all right now and will be a hard horse to beat when he is sent to the races. United Verde is ready and looks good. He should give a good account of himself in any company, especially over a soft course. Bon Homme, the Meadowbrook Stables handicap "ace," is another horse doing well. While he has shown nothing sensational in his gallops, his work has been creditable. Continued on twelfth page. MONTFORTJONESBIGSTABLE Continued from first page. He was timed this morning a mile in 1 :45%. Sun Fey. the W. S. Kilmer Derby and Oaks candidate, was given a slow mile in 1 :50. Superintendent Tom Young received a message from Andy Blakely this morning asking for six stalls for immediate use. Blakely is at Jamaica with the horses owned by W. Daniel, the Chicago turfman. In this band are Blanc Seeing, winner of the Tijuana Derby, which Blakely is pointing for the Kentucky Derby ; the undefeated Black Toney. two-year-old filly Sue Donovan, and Lighter, winner of the Cof froth Cup. Mose Goldblatt said today that the Whit-nevs would send eight of their best horses here to tun in the Derby and fill their stake engagements. Right stalls have been prepaid for these stallable thoroughbreds. Mr. Goldblatt says the last he saw of Enchantment he was training nicely for the Derby and that has not been so many days ago. ment he was training well for the Derby timber, including Chickvale and Barbary Bash. Mrs. Payne Whitney will send with the H. P. Whitney Derby eligibles Cherry Pie and probably Rialto.
