J . i c • . I ■ : SEA TALES FINE RACE • Takes Valuable Green Spring Valley Steeplechase. ♦ ■ Picketer No Longer a Maiden, but Has His Troubles in Defeating Son-o-Unc. PIMPICO, Md., May 4— C. K. Harrison. Jr.s, good mare Sea Tale was a victress in the Green Spring Valley Steeplechase over Bullseye, .and Sweepment was third. The winner was ridden by J. J. Rowan and was sent to the front right at t..o start. She made all the pace and jumped in faultless fashion. It was unfortunate that Mahoney, who rode Sweepment, was physically and mentally incapable of riding the Loft star. Sweepment was messed about in outrageous fashion and it was only through his own gameness that he closed such a uig gap to finish third. Trainer Hirsch sent him to the post a fit jumper, but the scarcity of steeplechase riders on the grounds at the time rendered it impossible to substitute another for Mahoney. A field of eleven faced the starter and Sea Tale, displaying the most good speed, raced right to the front. Through the first turn of the field she was pressed by Wrack Grass and her stablemate Courteous. Peccant, Bullseye and Sweepment were farther back. Going to the ninth fence in the second turn of the field Lollipop and Earloeker went down. Simms, who rode Lollipop, was removed from the field in an ambulance, while Cheyne was badly shaken up. Sea Tale disposed of Wrack Grass and Courteous, then raced along in front and easily withstood the challenges of Bullseye and Peccant. Sweepment finished gamely and closed a big gap, but could not get to Bullseye for second place. The race had ,000 added and netted the winner ,250. BELLE K. EASILY. Belle K., ridden by C. Kummer and racing for Lewis Garth, was an easy winner of the opening dash, for two-year-olds, at four and a half furlongs. Fehrah and Sam Smith finished second and third. It was a stirring finish that came with the running of the third race, a dash of four and a half furlongs, for two-year-olds. J. S. Cosden furnished the winner in Kings Ransom, a son of Crimper — Kings Oak. Ridden by Kummer he had a head advantage over Flying Fur at the end. while Bamra was a good third. Dr. OMara, heavily backed, ran disappointingly. H. P. Whitneys Picketer graduated from the ranks of the maidens when he came home first in a drive with the Greentree Stables Son-o-Unc. while Redbrand was third. D. L. Richards Miracle Man won the fuili race, a dash of a mile and a sixteenth under claiming conditions, in an easy manner from Royal Duck, with Gallivant third. The Kenton Stable scored its first victory of this spring when Thorny Way was an easy winner of the dash of three-quarters under claiming conditions that was the sixth race. It was a mediocre field that started in the race and Rhinegold went out to make the pace, and made it fast. He drew away into a long lead, but Thorny Way worked her way up on the outside and passing him in the stretch won going away, while Dr. Charles Wells also passed Rhinegold in the stretch. Apex took the last race in a canter by ten lengths and ran its three-quarters in 1:11%. a sufficient reason for the others being far back of the flying winner. «
