Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Oct 26, 1903 Racing at Aqueduct, Latonia, "Worth and St. Louis. It has leaked out that the workout of John W. Schorrs yearlings last Saturday at the Williamette Stud, which was witnessed by the Memphis turfman, was sensational.. Of the twenty he has retained to carry his colors next season in the big two-year-old events all ran in very fast time. They were worked in pairs and there was not a yearling in the collection that did not reel off an eighth better than twelve seconds. The last weeks racing at Worth this year opened auspiciously today, a large crowd being present and the racing holding good throughout the day. No stake or special feature was 1 offered, but the card was well balanced, re suiting in several close and exciting finishes. The fourth race was a handicap at three-quarters. Bummer was rightfully made an odds-on choice and won as the odds indicated he should. He assumed the lead as soon as the barrier went up and, showing much speed throughout, never left the result in doubt, winning as his rider pleased by three lengths from Gregor K, which beat The Don a half length, for second place. Wild Thyme, Embarrassment and Ahumada. This was the order of the finish for the Aqueduct Handicap, the feature race of the opening day of the Queens County Jockey Clubs autumn meeting, which opened under clear skies and a fast track. Embarrassment was favorite, but at no time during the running of the race did he seriously threaten the winner. Wild Thyme was off in third position, but at the half post moved up behind the pace maker, Ahumada, and rating behind the latter to the stretch turn went to the front when Redfern called on her and won with speed in reserve by one length from Embarrassment, which beat Ahumada by three lengths for second place.
