CAPTAIN HALS FAST WORK Goes a Mile in 1:43% in Fine Style ā Swope Also Gallops Impressively. LOUISVILLE. Ky., April Lā Today was the birthday anniversary of A. A. Kaysers Kentucky Derby candidate Captain Hal, and the crack son of Black Toney and Wavering signalized the event by showing one of the most impressive trials of the spring training season. For the first time since his training for the Derby, the black colt was asked to go a mile at a good pace and he made a splendid impression by going the distance in the time of 1 :43% ; only once this season has this time been shaded. Secondary only to the good trial of Captain Hal was that of Bud Fishers Derby candidate Swope. which, under Alex Gordons direction, was given a mile trial at Douglas Park. The colt carried over his Derby weight and. running an even pace, ran the distance in 1 :45. J. C. Ferris, trainer of the Derby candidate Brave Bob and other horses, arrived from Nashville, Tenn., in time to work his colt three-quarters in 1:22%. C. C. Van Meter arrived from California and assumed the handling of Mission Peak, Derby candidate, and a couple of two-year-olds belonging to F. J. Kelley, Jr. Mr. Van Meter stated that all of the turf holding of the late F. J. Kelley in California are to l:e disposed of this summer, including the ranch.
