Md.. April 1. — Charles Garriran. old-time American rider, and more recently a trainer in France and Germany, has readied up an even score of thoroughbreds at the Ross Farm in Howard County, Maryland, for racing at Rowie and Havre de Grace through the month of April. Ten of these will bear the silks of William A. Read, governing director of the Laurel Park Stud Company; ten the colors of Major Frank W. White, who last year and the year before trained the Laurel Park Stud Companys horses. Major White, who is associated with Mr. Read in the management of the Laurel Park Stud Companys import business, wont train horses any more. He will be going from time to time to England and Ireland to look over horses the LMbTcJ Park Stud Company purchases through its Knglish and Irish selection committee for racing and sale in the Fnited States and Canada. Major White has. however, had under his eye since the first of the year the horses at the Ross Farm, where there is a covered training track, four laps to the mile, and a track in the open one mile around. The mile track is as good as the best race course in Maryland. The horses that will bear the silks of Major White are : Squarson, b. g. ft. by Simon Square — Little P.lack. Casper, eh. Garrigan has taken full advantage of the fine training weather of February and March. His charges are all well along toward racing condition. Rut some, naturally, are fitter than others. Major White figures that the first horses of his own string that will appear under colors are Squarson. Russovia, American Roy, Muscovite. The Puritan and Gasper, and of Mr. Reads, Kemal, Rlue-mantle. Rowlands Request, Arabian Knight and William Tell. As many as four or five of these will race at Rowie through the first fortnight of April. All of them, and possibly some of the others, will appear at Havre de Grace. Chang-chia, which started eight times in England last year without once finishing out of the money, may prove of Derby quality. He will race in America as soon as Major White is satisfied that he is right. He appears to be acclimated already, although he came over only a few months ago. Gasper, a gelding of this year, raced through the field last year and set a new-track mark for the Aqueduct short course, 4 :02 flat, when he defeated the fast jumping Isis on July 5. Gasper has plenty of all round stuff. There are few faster horses anywhere, in fact-Mr. Read races extensively in England. He will have twenty two-year-olds racing this coming year. Possibly he may win one of the great English handicaps with Diapason, a son of Diadumenos and Venture- some, winner of the Newbury Gup. Roncaster Alexandra Handicap and Dudley Plate last year. Diapason was bred by Lord DAber-non. Venturesome is an American mare. She is owned by Arthur R. Hancock and has a yearling brother of Diapason. Mr. Read is a partner of Lord Ivor Churchill in the own- ership of Rroken Faith, a gelded son of Kings Proctor, and a good stayer. ♦— —
