HISTORY OF MILE RECORD From Ten Broecks 1:39% to Cherry Pies 1:35 2/5, Present American Mark for Distance. Here is how the American mile racing record on regulation courses has been reduced since Ten Broeck startled the world by running the distance in 1 :39 3-4 at Louisville, Ky., in 1887. The first break came in 1890 when Bacine lowered it to 1 :39 1-2. , Then in 1894 Arab hung up 1 :39 and later in the same year Libertine reduced that mark to 1:38 3-4. That time successfully withstooJ every attack for six years until in 1900 the great Voter, with 122 pounds up, lowered it to 1 :38. Then came in quick succession 1 M% in 1901, 1 :.T735 in 1903. 1 :37% in 1903. It w is five years before another reduction look pla--1 when Centre Shot, in 1908. ran th» distarce in 1 :3"Vand over the exceptionally fast Santa Anita track at Los Angeles, Cal. For six years Centre Shots mark remained undisturbed. The year 1914 was epochal from a mile record-breaking standpoint, the American record being reduced four times during that twelve months. First it was Bonne Chance that sent Centre Shots mark into oblivion by hanging up 1 :37 at Juarez, then at the same track Christopher lowered it to 1 :36*s. later Amalfi at Syracuse sent it down to 1 :36 1-4. and still later the brilliant Sun Briar to 1 :3C!5. Another six years rolled by before the mighty Man o War, one of the greatest of our record breakers, appeared on the scene and before he fipished his triumphant career the mile record stood at 1 :ih%. That seemed to be the peak, but along came Audacious in the following year and again the record was lowered to 1 :3.r»%, which stood until Cherry Pte trimmed off another fifth of a second, or 1 :35%, the present record.
