Aside from the excitement of the spirited racing and close finishes, there was also disappointment for those who pinned their hopes on the favorites, as several failed when least expected to do so. This was particularly true in the mile of the sixth race, in which Clarkson was considered best, with only Green Springs to fear. The finish saw Cadmus, the extreme outsider in the betting, home first a half length in advance of Bedazzle, while Clarkson barely saved third place. Cadmus was lucky to slip through an opening at the first turn and outran the others all the way. Bedazzle showed good speed and made a determined effort to wear down Cadmus. Clarkson was turned side-1 ways at the start and as good as left, but raced up to the leader gradually but tired after a good three-quarters. Inches separated the first three at the end of the opening dash with the decision going to Kleven Sixty from the stable of W. E. Applegate, while Jimmie Trinz was second and Three Sixty, a stablemate of ithe winner, finished third. Eleven Sixty raced head and head with his stablemate for the entire distance and drew away slightly at the sixteenth post, but had to be ridden to the limit to stall off the datermined rush of Jimmie Trinz. The latter began slowly on the outside and was used much getting to a contending position on the far side. Coming wide into the stretch, he finished with a great rush and would have won in another stride. Three Sixty showed speed and only tired in the final sixteenth. Another close finish came in the second race, in which Miss Paige ;ust got up to beat Vanderburg by a head, while Yorkshire Relish closed an immense gap to get the minor portion of the purse. Miss Paige raced close up to the stretch, where she came to the extreme outside and finished with a strong rush to win in the last strides. Van- derhurg had no excuse taking the short way and tiring afer wearing down Shasta Rap- ids. Yorkshire Relish made up ground after a rough journey. Shasta Rapids quit in the final sixteenth. There was a big surprise in the success of Time and Tide and a decided upset in the defeat of the odds-on favorite Norfield in the third race. Time and Tide outran the others from the start and easily held Norfield safe all through the stretch. The latter did his best and had no excuses. Lone Pine hugged the rail throughout and finished fast. Olym- pian King began fast, but was immediately outrun and tired in the final drive. The fourth fell to Pennon, from the stable of Olson and Campbell, which beat Miss Nan- tura by a length. Pennon raced forwardy and gained steadily, getting through between horses on the last turn and drawing clear in the final sixteenth. Miss Nantura set a pood pace and showed the way to the last eighth before tiring. Miss Omond was a prominent contender all the way and finished fast. Olds Eight was far back for a half and came around on the outside on the last turn and finished with a tremendous rush. A sparkling contest marked the running of l,the fifth race and the finish was exciting. with Doctor Corbet t, Solimente and Chevalier home in the order named. Doctor Corbett gained steadily on the outside, was carried wide on the last turn, but found an opening "entering the stretch and, finishing fast, just got up. Solimente followed Chevalier per-1 sistently and wore him down in the upper stretch, but just as she appeared the winner bolted to the outside fence, which cost her the race. Chevalier showed a high turn of speed but was rushed along at top speed and tired. ■
