NEEDLE GUN TO FORE Wm. Zieglers Derby Hope Makes a Fair Showing. • i Scores in Lexingtons Main Race — Rosa Greener, Winner Monday, Repeats On Tuesday. — — LEXINGTON, Ky., May 5.— William Zieg- I ler, Jr.s Needle Gun, a son of Under Fire — 1 Stitch in Time, made a bid for recognition * as a dangerous candidate for the Kentucky Derby by scoring at a mile and seventy yards T In the feature of an ordinary card at the j Kentucky Association course this afternoon. j I| Following him came Sarah Day. with Saar l| : in third place. The mile and seventy yards ! i was run in 1:45. Needle Gun had his stable- j mate. Borderland, another Derby eligible, as j L a running mate, but the latters prowess was I not disclosed in this running, as his rider, C. I| Ponce, would not let him perform at his top j | t speed. He began easing him back soon after | I « the start, after beginning slowly and at the I first turn he was directly in Hidden Moneys wake and Ponce took him in back of the filly. , There were eight starters in the race, some decidedly ordinary ones included. Sarah Day ] moved into the lead with a rush and led the others well under restraint for three-quarters, j where Needle Gun, well ridden by G. Fields, i j, moved forward rapidly and, after a sharp | but brief brush in the stretch, drew out to ! ; win well under restraint. Sarah Day, hard , ridden toward the end, outstayed Saar. The . latter met with some interference, but came fast when clear. MUST IMPROVE CONSIDERABLY. 1 Needle Guns performance was a fairly | good one, but not of the kind that would cause one to enthuse over his Kentucky Derby chances. In the opinion of close observers he will have to improve considerably before he can be reckoned as a strong contender. The race served trainer Spiers purpose. He shipped the colts here to give them 1 a race. Both will be returned to Louisville ! tomorrow. The near close of the meeting was responsible for a generous attendance, despite cool, j threatening weather. The track had dried fast during the night and it assisted materially in making the contests spectacular, though there was an absence of quality m the various contests. Rosa Greener, which won Monday at a mile and seventy yards, came back with a victory in the fifth for which she was a slight favorite. Her success today was of the lucky variety, for Contact was possibly j | best and was only beaten in the last stride after she had lost considerable ground by going wide during the last quarter. Rosa Greener, by virtue of saving ground in the stretch, got up in the final stride. Trapnet, another short priced one, was successful in the sixth race, also over the Futurity distance. His supporters did not feel very jubilant when he sulked at the start : and was almost left at the post. He began i j j moving up strongly after the first quarter I I and wore down the others with ease to win as his rider pleased from Elm. The latter showed good speed for a half mile, but tired some thereafter, but was best of the others and landed in second place. OLD TIPPITY WITCHET AGAIN. The veteran Tippity Witchet. winner of many stakes and hero of many strenuous battles with the best, found himself anions a band of lowly ones in the opening race over the Futurity Course. He was held in ] most favor and ho won handily in spite of the incompetent efforts of his rider. He had to be ridden hard in the stretch after losing much ground to outstay Zante, with Prudy in third place. Another band of poor ones met in the second race and there developed a big surprise by the victory of Cobhain, ridden by H. Meyer. It was the riders superiority over [* Neal that gave him the victory. Neal had the mount on Bed Seth, a pronounced favorite. Deceitful, another poorly ridden one. finished in third place. Mrs. J. Die-bold, the owner of Orlova. put in a claim for Red Seth, but the stewards would not allow it on the ground of improper registration. Just a Toy scored the first purse that the Southland Stable has earned this year in Kentucky when Kelsay hustled her away in advance from the barrier and led the others home to win handily from Valence. with Polly Atwell, an outsider, in third place. Just a Toy and Valence absorbed most of the betting attention here and they practically had the race between them throughout, with Just a Toy proving the gamer at all stages. e
