This afternoon at Pimlico, Courageaus, a colt by Whisk Broom II. added the Bowling Brook Stakes to the list of victories scored by horses racing in i the colors of the master of Brookdale Farm. Courageous was ridden by "Pony" McAtee, j rated off the fast early pace set by Laddie Buck, and in the stretch run wore the latter down to get Up in the closing strides to win by a neck. Finland, an outsider, was third, beaten a length for second place. Storm ; King was favorite for this race and the best [ he could do was to beat Sir Ronald. Off j slowly and messed about. Storm King never i had a chance of showing his real merit and, I although he made a desperate effort entering the home stretch, he failed miserably at the end. The Bowling Brook was a dash of three-j quarters and had a gross value of ,980, the winners portion of which was ,020. Preakness eligibles are continuing to arrive from New York and Kentucky and Fri- | days 0,000 fixture promises to bring together a large and high class field. With every indication pointing for settled weather a fast track should be in order. Chantey and Reminder went a mile and a quarter be- j tween races in 2 :09. The fractional time I was :24, -AS%, 1:13%, 1:40, 2:09. Prince of Bourbon went as follows: :24, ! :48%. 1 :14%, 2:10. i Chantney is right on edge and in his trial I this afternoon was under restraint the en- j tire way. i Sande and Swope were given an ovation when they passed the grand stand on parade I to the post in the fourth race. The Fisher j candidate for the Preakness had a large fol- j lowing and he gave his backers a few joyous ■ moments by going to the front when the start came and leading his opponents until after passing the half-mile post. Johnson then snt Rustic up and the latter, passing the early pacemaker, was taken in hand. It was well that he was, for, entering the home Continued on sixteenth page. ANOTHER WHITNEY SUCCESS Continued from first page. stretch, Joy Smoke came from behind and made a great bid for the race. At the eighth post he was on even terms with the | leader, but that little bit that Johnson had saved told in the final drive where Rustic came again and, at the finish, won going away by a length. Joy Smoke was five-lengths in front of Swope. The first race furnished a complete upst when Facet galloped home six lengths in front of his rivals. Hudgins. the colored rider of the Harry Payne Whitney stable, had the mount and. after getting away none too well, hugged the rail and saving ground entering the home stretch, dashed to the front and then drew into a long lead. Back of the winner the next five fought it out head and head. The official placing gave second place to Best Shot and third money to Cobra. Then came Muriel S.. Flapper Girl and Fore Lady. Whatever chance the last named had was ruined by Flapper Girl. Rounding the far turn she kept carrying the favorite out and entering the home stretch went extremely wide. The interference resulted in both riders being called into the stewards stand after the race, and the investigation developed the fact that Dost Shot bore over and collided with Flapper Girl causing the latter to run out. Morris was absolved of all blame. Fredden Rock proved a handy winner in the Baltimore Steeplechase. This was a two-mile race for maiden steeplechasers and a j field of nine went to the post. Kennedy | rode a confident race on the winner. He had his mount under restraint until the last turn of the field and when called on Fredden I Rock went to the pacemaker with a rush to j draw into a long lead at the end. Irish I Jig. a distant follower until the last quarter finished full of run and easily disposed of ! Prickle. Rosy Jester, an imported fencer, showed keen speed for about a mile and a half. He jumped beautifully and appeared to be going easy until the eleventh fence. | The winner made his bid at this jump and when he did Rosy Jester chucked it and at : the end tired badly. Pagebrook was the only one to come to grief. He made a bad | : landing at the eleventh jump and lost his rider. Tom Healey sent a pair of two-year-olds in the W. J. Salmon string to the post in the third race in Punjab and Display and they finished first and third. Punjab beat- ing the odds-on favorite. Silver Finn, by a neck with Display a length and a half back of the latter. Punjab and Display were first time starters. Both are extra good lookers and in todays contest they performed impressively. Display began rather slowly and was carried wide in the early atagaa. At the end he finished in resolute fashion that promised better things later ]on. Silver Finn had no excuses to offer for .his defeat.
