GOES FULL DERBY ROUTE • — Captain Hal Works Mile and a Quarter in 2:07% at Downs. • Lee O. Cotner Gallops Mile and an Eighth in 1:1 ;»V£— Quatrain Easily Romps Mile in 1:41%. • « LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— Tuesday was the scheduled work day for Quatrain, Captain Hal and Lee O Cotner, the three most prominent Derby eligibles at the Downs. The trio all worked in good time, in a creditable manner. Captain Hal was the first to appear. Ho began at the eighth post with Jake Heupel up and was timed as follows : :23, :353s, :47%, 1:00%. 1:13%, 1:26%. 1:40%, 1:53%, and finished out the mile and a quarter in 2 :07%. He was slowing up in the last eighth. Lee O. Cotners gallop showed him in a I better light than did his last work. He went a mile and an eighth, beginnng from the three-quarters post and wore blinkers. He also ran fast the first part of the move as th? following fractions show : :12, :23%, :35%, :y%, 1:00%, 1:13%, 1:27, 1:40%. 1:55%, Lee O. Cotner was under restraint the first part but tired perceptibly after reaching the mile. Frederick Johnsons Quatrain demonstrated his superb fitness by going a mile in 1 :41%. Owner Johnson had previously stated that he wished the colt to go in around 1 :43 but his rider found it hard to hold him to that pace. The fractional time was :24%, :49, 1 :14%, j 1 :41%, every eighth being traveled nearly alike without a sign of effort on the part of j the horse. He had a fair amount of weight up and the move was highly impressive and also very satisfactory. The track was greatly improved but was not a fast track it being quite rough in some places. Clear weather prevailed however, and trainers are hopeful of favorable conditions from now on. Air Castle, Harned Bros. Derby eligible, went a rather good mile in :48%, 1 :16, 1 :41%. Abstract went three-eighths in :36%, with Annihilator accompanying him. Several excellent moves were noted by horses in the older divisions, especially those which are being pointed for the Clark Handicap on opening day. Spic and Spans mile in 1 :42 was a good one as was Busters mile in 1:43%. Princess Adele galloped a good half mile in 49 seconds and Barracuda, from the Hol-man stable, worked a mile as follows: :49%, 1:15%, 1:42%. Nassau, from the same establishment, was timed for the distance in a fraction faster time. Bourbon Boy worked a good mile in an impressive manner, he being caught in 1 :42Vs for the distance and G. F. Croissants Stan-wix went a good mile in 1 :42%. Monday afternoon Kentucky Cardinal, G. Continued on sixteenth pace. GOES FULL DERBY ROUTE Continued from firat page. F. Croissants recent acquisition and which is regarded as a Derby starter, went an easy mile in 1:44 and galloped out the mile and an eighth in 1:59. Frederick Johnson states that jockey B. Breuning will have the mount on his Quatrain in the Derby. A telegram received today by Mr. Johnson fully confirmed this earlier report. Breuning, although he has never ridden the colt in a race, has been astride him in morning work and, according to Mr. Johnson, "knows the colt." It is the intention of owner Johnson with the consent of the stewards to work Quatrain the Derby distance between races Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs. He will gallop a short distance Friday and the Saturday move will be his next real work. Over at Douglas Park, Mark Master, the International Stables Derby hope, is responding rapidly to treatment for his quarter crack. He may, in the opinion of horsemen, again be ready for training for the Derby within a few days. In the event that Mark Master should be a starter, jockey M. Anderson will likely have the mount. The division of the Carl Wiedemann horses that were in Maryland arrived here without In Memoriam, which had been unloaded at Latonia on account of slight sickness. The horse later arrived safely and was out for a slow gallop Tuesday morning. Lou Hatchett is an arrival from Columbus with the three-year-old Ball Gee and the two-year-old Peter Brush. The Churchill Downs plant is rapidly assuming its usual ready condition that is noted when the meeting opens. The new clubhouse entrance adjoining the paddock is practically completed. The addition to the clubhouse is ready and the new grandstand at the far end of the present clubhouse stand will be completed in time. The advance guard of Lexington arrivals is looked for by Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs. The Clark Handicap this year appears to be a very open race with the publication of the weights. Captain Hal is regarded a certain starter. Racket was an easy winner in the sixth. Outrun in the early stages he moved up fast rounding the far turn and in the stretch easily pursued his opponents to win going away by three lengths. Quotation was second a length and a half in front of the heavily backed favorite. Rejection. The latter was off slowly and was carried wide most of the way. Barnes was busy on her at the top of the stretch, but the mare lacked speed. *
