DEAD HEAT AT DOWNS Judges Unable to Separate Brier Hill and Rose Mist Pair Furnish Exciting and Inter ¬ esting1 Struggle Another Bradley Success LOUISVILLE Ky May 26 A dead heat the first on the Kentucky racing circuit in years enlivened proceedings at Churchill Downs today The tie came with the running of the second race W E Hupps Brier Hill and John Lowes Rose Mist finishing so close together that the placing judges could not separate them Trainer Frakes in charge of Brier Hill told the stewards that he would not run it off and as John Lowe owner of Bose Mist failed to show up and announce his plans steward Charles F Price ordered the race made official and the purse divided dividedJockey Jockey B Finnerty was astride Brier Hill while D Dubois rode Bose Mist The pair fought it out all the way and after turning for home Bose Mist gained a slight advan ¬ tage over her rival Finnerty rode for all that he was worth through the final eighth and as the two horses passed the judges they were practically locked together Sandalwood got third money moneyIdeal Ideal weather and an unusually fast track together with an excellent racing program drew out a big crowd at the Downs today Close finishes were in order with several of the winners in doubt until the final strides stridesEASY EASY TOR BILL STRAP STRAPAlthough Although the Green Biver Purse fifth on the program was not the most valuable on the card it brought out the best field of horses The Idle Hour Farm Stable garnered another purse here when Bill Strap a fouryearold brown colt by North Star III Serclia won in easy fashion from ten others othersJockey Jockey E Blind piloted the winner and he rode faultlessly At the end of the first quarter Waterson Trail enjoyed a slight lead over him but Blind quickly put the Dan Lehan representative away and sent his mount on about his business At the end he was two lengths to the good of Barluna with Tractor next in order orderWhen When it comes to consistency Cloister James McGees fiveyearold is in a class by himself in these parts or anywhere else for that matter He won the third race today which was over the route of one and oneeighth miles and this made his third victory of the meeting Jockey E Scobie was on him again today and rode him in his usual style restraining him off the early pace When he called on him in the stretch lie had plenty of run left and disposed of Spanish Lay and Day Trap TrapLOCAL LOCAL TURFMAXS VICTORY VICTORYFourteen Fourteen cheap selling platers met in the opener and Tamper owned by Joseph M Hubbard local turfman was returned the winner He was hard ridden by jockey Sammy Steele but after turning in the stretch ran to the middle of the track and Trinket which finished second went out with him The pair staged an interesting stretch duel but Tamper was too good Lady Inez proved best of the others othersIn In order to ride jockey E Scobie owner Continued on sixteenth page DEAD HEAT AT DOWNS Continued from first pace Pat Stanton picked up an additional five pounds on Nimrod in the third race waiving the apprentice allowance That he made a smart move was shown when Nimrod led his opponents all the way and won from Omnia and Frederick Raphael This race like three of the others on the program was over the distance of seveneighths of a mile Omnia furnished some contention nut not enough to worry the winner Frederick Raphael had a bit of trouble in the early stages Thirteen went to the post here and crowding was inevitable inevitableAnother Another nose finish attended the running of the sixth race when Gay Hallie strongly ridden by jockey E Benham got up in time to beat Dr Maxon in the last stride Dr Maxon left the barrier with a rush and held sway most of the way but tired a trifle at the finish when Gay Hallie charged on him This made the second win of the meeting in a row for Gay Hallie Rosetta Stone took the short end of it due to her rider steering her the shortest way home
