HASTE CAPTURES HISTORICAL WITHERS STAKES Carries the J E Widener Colors to Gallantly Achieved Triumph Crusader Finishes Second and Espino Third Pompey Among the Unplaced Horses Per Persica sica Also Scores for the Widener Stable NEW YORK N Y May 26 Haste Joseph E Wideners magnificent bay son of Maintenant and Miss Malaprop was winner of the historic Withers Stakes today ind added 22800 to his column of earnings Haste won as a good horse should He forced every foot of the pace and after putting away the speediest of his rivals had enough left under the able riding of Earl Sande to withstand the stretch rush of the others It was the Glen Riddle Stables Crusader that raced to second place and Wm Ziegler Jrs Espino was swung in time to save the third from Walter M Jeffords Mars And Pompey the twoyearold champion of last year was beaten by six horses in the running runningThe The Withers made it a big day at Belmont Park and a bis crowd was attmolpil for the midweek racing The weather was delightful for the sport and it was a thor ¬ oughly interesting setting that was furnished for the big event Fifteen lined up at the barrier for the Withers and with little delay the field was sent away in good alignment Sande ever alert at the barrier had Haste away in his stride though both Vespasian and Mars outbroke him slightly and Nichavo and Sarmaticus were also right with the leader Pompey had started badly and Breuning seemed unable to get him to running with the result that there was no time that he cut any figure in the race Vespasian set a fast pace but Sande had Haste alongside of him and Nichavo and Sarmaticus went along close after him himIt It was only a question of hanging to the sprinters but there was peril of Sande using Haste up by such a ride but it was accom ¬ plished First Nichavo and then Sarmaticus fell by the wayside and still Haste Avent right along on his merry way Before the stretch was reached the Widener colt was a couple of lengths clear and still galloping strongly Sarmaticus was tiring in second place but Mars was looming up with a deter ¬ mined rush and Navigator for an instant showed in the first division Vespasian was through and Pompey after making a bluff around on the outside was all through throughCRUSADERS CRUSADERS CLOSING HUSH HUSHIn In the last eighth Sande gave a quiclc glance over his shoulder and at the time though well clear he realized his mount was tiring and he hunched him along smartly And it was well he did for Crusader was charging through the field in magnificent style while Espino was also coming along from far back with a great burst of speed speedThese These two were catching Haste at every stride in that last quarter but he stuck it out to be winner by a length while Crusader only beat Espino by a head and Mars was at the tail of the Ziegler colt coltAfter After the running there was some discus ¬ sion of the difference of form shown by Haste in the Toboggan and the Withers but that is readily accounted for by the difference in the courses Silver Fox like Haste did not show anything in the Toboggan and he carno back with a brilliant race on the main course That is exactly what was accomplished by Haste HasteFollowing Following the Withers there came another victory for the Widener silks as well as i double for Sande when Pcrsica was home un ¬ easy winner from the Bancocas Stables Jumbo and Gifford A Cochrans Eglantinu was the one to be third thirdThis This was a four and a half furlongs dash for maiden twoyearolds and when Iersica ran the distance in 52 she had established a new record for the course courseSERIES SERIES OF MISHAPS MISHAPSThe The Steeplechase Handicap was a series of mistakes and accidents and resulted in a victory for Mrs F Ambrose Clarks old Minata with the Broad Hollow Stables Morn ¬ ing Mist easily beatinb the Brookmeade Stables Boatman for second place The others did not finish finishMrs Mrs Vanderbilts Nicolas while far in ad ¬ vance of the others fell three jumps from tha finish The Somerset Stables Uhol went down at the same jump Soot a stable com ¬ panion to Boatman refused at the last ob ¬ stacle while Tassel a stablemate to Minata was pulled up after the next to the last jump and when she was hopelessly out of the running runningBut But that was not all In a false start all of the riders with the exception of W Hunt on Nicholas and C Smoot who rode Tassel ran past the recall flag and they raced over three obstacles before they found out it was no start This probably took more out of Continued on sixteenth page HASTE CAPTURES WITHERS Continued from first page Boatman which was showing the way than any of the others and probably helped Minata for he prefers three miles to two miles milesWhen When the actual start came Nicholas at once raced into a good lead but Hunt had trouble keeping him from bearing out on the turns When the front field was reached he had a long lead He was making his jumps in a stride and looked all over the winner Boatman was in second place until his ef ¬ forts in the false start began to tell and then it was Minata that plodded along into second place but he was so far back of Nicholas that only an accident to the gray could bring him victory Then the accident came three jumps from the finish finishWith With Nicholas down it left Minata with a gpod lead and it saw him safely home though he was a tired horse at the end Morning Mist hung on well to take second place and Boatman was the only other horse to finish as has already been told toldThere There was an additional excuse for Boat ¬ man when he hit a beacon at the lower end of the field upsetting it and being knocked off stride strideFrank Frank Taylors Sarapion was winner of the Richmond Handicap a race under the new conditions to which only horses that had raced in claiming or selling races were eligible It was over a mile and a sixteenth and J F Adams J Fred A was the one to set a fast pace and the one to give Sara ¬ pion plenty of argument until well inside the last eighth eighthRight Right at the end Washakie came with the rush that landed him in second place but Sarapion was safely home homeIn In this race the performance of E Barnes on Walter J Salmons Traveller as well as the ride of J Brunner on Irish Marine were exhibitions which did not add to the credit of either jockey There did not seem to be any stage of the race when these jockeys were making a serious etiort etiortA A race over the threequarters of the Widener Course for platers was the first offering and it brought out a big field with J A Harpers All in All winning rather handily from Squire Bill Olivers Fiddle ¬ sticks and Harry Marts Zero Hour raced third thirdFiddlesticks Fiddlesticks showing becoming speed was never far away and through the last eighth she caught the Oliver sprinter to put him away in the closing sixteenth ero Hour finished well to take third Aragon was a real tip on the race and the fact that Albert Johnson had the mount added to his popularity before the running He did not cut much figure in the running and fifth at the end was the best he could accom ¬ plish
