GIRL SCOUT BEATEN Heavily-Backed Favorite Failure in Flag Day Handicap, j - Unpreparedness at Barrier and Incompetent Rider Brings ! About Her Reverse. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 14. The incompetency of S.- Cooper and the unpreparedness at the barrier resulted in failure for Girl Scout in the Flag Day Handicap, which featured todays offering at Washington Park. The double winner of her two previous starts, having beaten better ones than she met here this afternoon, was supposed to have the race at her mercy and, accordingly, was backed extensively with confidence. There were several bad post actors in the race and for that matter Girl Scout also helped to delay the send-off by unruliness, but when the start came it found her tangled up and this, with a lack of racing room, resulted in her leaving the . barrier in last place. The diminutive rider then rushed her into a pocket on the first turn after she had secured a prominent position and this again left her in last place. Cooper was at a los3 later in the stretch and he alternately kept her under restraint or applied himself more to the task of retaining his seat in the saddle than in trying to help her. Her performance this afternoon should not detract from her ability. The race was won by Orestes II., which, favored by a good start and racing in his best style, was always in command and in the final drive held Sanola safe. The latter was away well and raced forwardly throughout, to beat Cudgeller for second place. SPECTACULAR SPORT. Wintry blasts greeted the racing enthusiasts this afternoon and it kept a majority of the big crowd milling around in an effort to keep warm. The racing was again spectacular, with several close finishes featuring. The betting activities were of good volume, but as most of the favorites were downed, the public suffered losses. Another close finish developed in the fifth race when Scotland just managed to outstay Little Cyn, with Sixty directly in their wake. Scotland had moved into a good lead after going the first quarter and he came to the stretch with a five lengths lead, but thereafter he began tiring badly and just managed to get home in advance. It was another bad acting band at the post and delayed the start considerably. When the barrier was released Guerdon and Clarifier were as good as left. Don Diego, favorite, showed some early speed, but he was done after going half a mile. Henry Horner was another that threatened briefly, but when the actual racing began he was found wanting. Ten lowly ones were called upon to furnish the mile contest that opened todays sport, and it resulted in a closely fought finish, with Outlawed, a neglected one, landing the purse over Myrtle Belle and The Roll Call, the latter being third. The early running wa3 dominated by Bathilde Seth, the favorite, Last Cent following closely to the stretch, where they both gave away and this enabled Outlawed, Myrtle Belle and The Roll Call to carry on to the finish. WAPONOCA BY A NOSE. The second race, another at a mile, out of the chute, furnished an exciting finish, with Waponoca the winner by a nose over Bill Hare, with Extra Edition in third place. Statler and Waponoca were given the preference, but Statler was never a serious contender and raced in last place for almost the entire distance. Waponoca stayed close to the leaders In the early stages and, hard urged in the stretch, just lasted to beat home the fast-finishing Bill Hare. Extra Edition had to overcome early difficulties but, with racing room in the stretch, moved up steadily to land in third place. True Pal furnished a surprise in the third race, which brought out two-year-olds to race five-eighths. Bun and Birdwood had the call here, with Scotland Girl also receiving attention but, when it came to the real racing, the favorites were never formidable arid True Pal and Scotland Girl were left to fight it out for the purse. True Pal raced much improved over his preceding start, when he was ridden listlessly. He fought it out gamely with Scotland Girl In the last eighth and shook her off near the end. Birdwood began dropping out of it after the first half mile had been traversed, and Bun had slight chance after suffering interference in the first quarter. Another band of the lowliest at the track made the contest in the sixth race, also at a mile from the chute, and it resulted, in a victory for Private Seth, which managed to outstay the poorly ridden Blended, favorite. Shiraz finished in third place. The early contenders, Queena Mario and Tease, retired in the stretch. The final race, at a mile and an eighth, fell Continued on twentieth page. GIRL SCOUT BEATEN Continued from first page to Power, which had to be urged hard in the last sixteenth to outstay the fast finishing Little Ammie. The latter might have won but for interference she suffered when she attempted to go through next the inner rail while racing at the lower turn. She came with a rush when she secured racing room in the stretch. Worthman was a strong factor during the stretch, but gave way when he began swerving out in the last sixteenth. The early contenders. Foreland and Halu, were done after reaching the stretch. Foreland had extensive support.
