AMERICAN DERBY AT WASHINGTON PARK . and 4 - P 1 Eight Named for Notable Race to Be Run This Afternoon : . Whiskery, Buddy Bauer and Hydromel -Outstanding Stars of Field Tremendous Crowd Certain to Witness Contest .-- Chicagoans will have opportunity to display their Derby spirit Saturday at Washington Park when the American Derby will have its decision. Present indications are that the occasion will not lack in pomp and glamor. Probably not of the variety that marked the festivities of the old Washington Park,, nor the hectic spirit attending Derby Day at Louisville, but, after the long lapse since the annual running of the American Derby, there must be a re-beginning, and the American Derby again has immense possibilities of being re-established to its former greatness. $ : S. Thompson 6-1 s The advance sale of reserved seats indicates a wonderful amount of interest more than exnected and far in excess of that displayed for the running of the 5100,000 fixture last year, which marked the renewal of the famous race. This year eight owners have made final entries to the race, but it is doubtful if more than five will accept when the bugler calls the starters to the post. Those in the doubtful list are Aregal, Bob Rogers and Black On "White. It would be strange indeed if one of this trio should triumph. The present interest centers in Harry Payne "Whitneys Whiskery ; Johnson N. Camdens Hydromel, and E. R. Bradleys Buddy Bauer. Dolan is an unknown quantity here, and Handy Mandy is not thought to be of the calibre to make Derby material. She is, as her name indicates, a handy filly but still a maiden. The running of the American Derby will enable Whiskery to wipe out his defeat in the Fairmount Derby by Buddy Bauer that is, if he is capable, and the general impression of the sharps is that he can, for he Is an overwhelming favorite to win the race. In the Fairmount Derby "Whiskery conceded Buddy Bauer eight pounds, and he was additionally handicapped by a blundering ride. Saturday the two colts meet under more favorable conditions, Whiskery is only conceding Buddy Bauer five pounds and, in addition, will be handled by a rider who is familiar with the colts peculiarities. Trainer Fred Hopkins, who is responsible for "Whiskerys development, as well as that of Bostonian, which annexed the Preakness Stakes, makes no secret of his confidence tnat Whiskery will triumph Saturday, and follow, the following week at Latonia, with a victory in the Latonia Derby. Buddy Bauers connections, however, are not troubled by the confidence of the Whitney-Hopkins camp, and contend that Buddy 1 Bauer will be right there when the finish is reached.
