At Washington Park One Best Bet WHISKERY In the Fifth Race. 1 . i Today is Derby Day at Washington Park, l True, it will not match the Derbys of old, i when racing was conducted at the original i Washington Park plant, but Chicagoans are 1 sure to see a race worthy of the name in ; todays renewal. A field of eight has been named to start 1 and possibly but five or six of these will actually make the issue. Whiskery, the win- ner of this years Kentucky Derby, and Buddy Bauer, victor in the Fai mount Derby, are the principal contestants, and the race should definitey decide which is the better of the two colts. Whiskery represents the East , and Harry Payne Whitney, while Buddy Bauer comes from the Kentucky establishment of Edward R. Bradley, so the race is more or less of a sectional affair as well. All that is lacking to make this the outstanding race of the year is the presence of Chance Shot, winner of the Belmont Stakes , and looked upon as the outstanding three-year-old of the year. Hydromel, Handy Mandy, Bob Rogers, Aregal and Black on White complete the field and it is plain to see that there are several entered which really do not belong in this sort of company. With racing now legal in Illinois it is to be expected that next years race will hold more of an attraction to all the leading three-year-olds and it would not be surprising to see a much larger purse than is the case this year. The Hyde Park Handicap, at three-quarters, and the Oakwood Handicap, over the mile distance, round out the Derby Day card and it can be truthfully said that todays program is the finest that has been offered to Chicago racegoers in a long time. PANI ROMA CHINK CvLONEL SETH. The opening number on the card, should go the way of PANI ROMA, if her last race is a true indication of her present, form. On that occasion she beat a fair band easily and, with her light weight today, should fare as well. CHINK is gradually getting into his best form and he may be heard from in this event COLONEL SETH should improve over his first time out at this track and we are expecting him to land closer up today. RONDELLE may prove dangerous. HAWK EYE KINSLEY NOBODY HOME. The manner in which HAWK EYE has been racing of late is such as to suggest that he is going to be a hard one to beat in the second offering. He was a handy winner of his only start here and in his last race at Aurora was also the winner. KINSLEY does not call for much on recent races, but is said to be well trained, and a race back to his trials should find him giving the winner the most argument NOBODY HOME was more or less consistent at Aurora, and a race to his best style should earn her some part of the purse. TRY AGAIN may be worth a chance bet. RIVAL SCOTLAND SENATOR NORRIS. The third, at three-quarters of a mile, styled the Hyde Park Handicap, .should result in a fast-run race, as some fairly good ones are entered therein. RIVAL, is an improved racer, having shown to better advantage in recent races than at any other time in his racing career. The same, if not better, odds should prevail, due to the class of oppo- l i i 1 ; 1 , , nents today. SCOTLAND is possessed of good speed and due to present fit form rates as the contender. SENATOR NORRIS, with three races at this track under his belt, appears capable of earning the show. The last-named is one of a three-horse entry, CHAIRMAN and BULLETIN being Bed-wells other representatives. ORESTES IL merits consideration. YEDDO JACK ALEXANDER IRON MASK II. The fourth race, the Oakwood Handicap at one mile, finds a daughter of Man o War selected to lead the way to some good ones. YEDDO, the one referred to, has proven herself a game filly, showing to good advantage when hard pressed. JACK ALEXANDER is a sweet trick and looms as the biff danger. The imported IRON MASK II. showed a return to winning form in his last out and is fairly capable when right. DEVON is a long shot of merit. WHISKERY HYDROMEL BUDDY BAUER. Eight entries are carded to start in the second renewal of the American Derby, carrying an added value of 5,000 and over the "gruelling route of one mile and a half. Of the- eight, three, BLACK ON WHITE, AREGAL and BOB ROGERS, are almost certain to be withdrawals, hopelessly outclassed accounting for this. Nineteen hundred and twenty-seven has been a banner year for H. P. Whitney in the matter of stake victories to the credit of his good racing establishment and the running of todays event should see WHISKERY adding another to that sportsmans credit. This good one has proved himself a tried and" true racer. HYDROMEL appears the only serious menace to the above named and easily figures to hold the place award safe. BUDD Y BAUER, victorious over WHISKERY in the Fairmount Derby, may encounter strenuous opposition in earning the show. GEORGE DE MAR NAT EVENS HOPELESS. Nine fairly evenly-matched ones are to make the issue in the sixth race, at one mile. GEORGE DE MAR is not far from a winning effort and he may step down in front here. NAT EVENS, last raced at Havre de Grace, is a known speedster at the distance and, if fit, may cause trouble. HOPELESS figures for improvement over recent races and he is a possibility for the minor award. For the long-shot speculators, TOKEN is the word. POWER FINLAND MYRTLE BELLE. The final number, at a mile, calls for a limit field of ordinary ones to contest and the hat-pin method is resorted to in an effort to locate the probable winner. POWER has shown the most consistency and a race in line with recent gallops should suffice today. FINLAND, a good thing- in his last race against fairly good ones, would occasion no surprise by taking down the major portion of the purse. MYRTLE BELLE has evidenced a liking for the going here by a win and two seconds in three starts and she figures to" be knocking at the door. WORTH-MAN, LAST CENT and FORELAND are others that are expected to show good performances.
