DERBY STARS AT LATONIA Hydromel, Whiskery and Buddy Bauer Arrive at Covingtons Beautiful Race Course. LATONIA, Ky., June 20. Hydromel, winner of the American Derby, arrived from Washington Park this morning. The colt unloaded in good condition and made the trip without mishap. Jockey L. Mc-Dermott, who piloted the J. N. Camden colt in his notable victory, returned to Latonia Sunday morning, as did jockey Alfred Johnson, who rode Buddy Bauer in the same race. This latter Idle Hour Farm colt and H. P. Whitneys Whiskery came in the same car with Hydromel. Trainer Fred Hopkins is not the least satisfied with Whiskerys present condition and there is-a strong possibility of his being kept out of- the Latonia Derby Saturday. Hopkins, upon the advice of James Rowe, chief of Mr. Whitneys staff of trainers, shipped the colt here. Hopkins has decided to pass final judgment on his condition after he breezes the colt Wednesday or Thursday. Hopkins said today that he believes the colt has had his fill, of racing and shipping and. that he is now far from his self. "The colt is badly in need of a let-up and if he does not show considerable improvement in the next few days he will "be shipped back to New York without running in the Latonia Derby," the young trainer added. Hopkins deeply regrets the possibility of Whiskery being, deprived of a chance, to be the first Kentucky Derby winner to account for the JLatonia Derby, since the Kentucky Jockey Club offered ,000 extra to the winner of the local Derby, if the winner is also the victor of the Kentucky Derby. Hopkins, however, has not entirely given up hope of starting the colt and anxiously awaits the morning when he will put the colt to test.
