At Washington Park One Best Bet-r-SPANISH LAY In the Fourth Race. v f n U u j t v J t 1 J j j 1 J 1 t j Contrary to expectations, the heavy rains which fell Sunday night in some parts of Chicago, did not. extend as far south as Washington Park, so the racing strip is fast for Tuesdays program. It is possibly in its best condition of the present meeting, if the time hung up in the various races Saturday means anything. While Hydromels time in the Derby was thought to be several seconds off, the other races bore out the contention that the oval was in tip-top condition. Platers have things pretty much their own way today, six of the seven events being framed for them. The other offering is the Commonwealth Handicap, a test of a mile and three-sixteenths and engaging a fast band. CROSS PLAT JOE ADAMS HELEN" E. A bulky field of two-year-olds is to meet in the first race, over the five-eighths distance. CROSS PLAY has been bang up in all of her races over this course, and this may prove a profitable spot for her. She would need to improve but a little to be the one to come down in front. JOE ADAMS has yet to win a race, but he has showed good form in all of his races here and will not be long in graduating from the non-winners ranks. HELEN E. gets the call for third. VOWED VENGEANCE is about due for an improved showing. FOREHEAD BETTY BALL STEP IS. The second offering is for maiden three-year-olds and over, to contest over the three-quarters distance, and it can be said that it is a pretty cheap band which makes the issue. FOREHEAD ran a good race her last time out and, if she put forth the same efforts today, may be good enough to win. BETTY BALL raced fairly well at Aurora last year and has been working in satisfactory manner over this course. This will be her first start of the year but, if she races to her trials, may cause the others some trouble. STEP IN is as good as another for the short end of the purse. FIFTEEN SIXTY rates a good chance. BREISACHER PRINCESS PAN BIG SWEEP. The three-quarters race carded as the third event should result in fairly good time being established, as some fast ones are slated to hook up. BREISACHER showed winning efforts in his only two attempts at this track, but is meeting, better ones today, but this may only prove to lengthen his price. PRINCESS PAN is possessed of a high flight of speed for the distance and appears to be the immediate danger. BIG SWEEP should have little trouble in earning the minor portion of the purse. SPANISH LAY GEORGE DE MAR-SMILING GUS. The safest investment on the card is found in the fourth race at one and three-sixteenths miles. SPANISH LAY is the one referred to. Recent races indicate a return to best form and when in trim, this one is capable of giving argument to better ones than encountered today. GEORGE DE MAR, in his earlier races at this course, showed to good advantage in fast company and is looked upon to race to the place. SMILING GUS is not far from a winning effort and is the dark one in todays event. The others figure to trail, with CARTOON leading the "also rans." SAMARON MISS MEISE CHINK. SAMARON is selected to show the way to the sixteen entered to compete with him in the one mile fifth race. This one has shown a fondness for the going prevailing here, as evidenced by his showing in his only three starts here. MISS MEISIE is capable of better things than recent races and is a long shot of merit. CHINK, heavily played disappointment in his last, may show a change of heart and reward his backers of the occasion. MISS ROSEDALB and ROCKY LANE, in the order named, figure as the next best ones of the others. SWEET MANDY TROMPING TO DAY-BED HARYEY. Picking the winner of the sixth race at one mile, is an uncertain proposition and one mans pick is as good as another. SWEET MANDY is the stab to cop the event. This one had creditable performances some time back, but has hot been to the races since. TROMPING TO DAY has developed into a fairly consistent one and is selected as second best. RED HARVEY, in best form, is capable of good things and is handed to the long shot brigade. ERLA LEE II. HAWK EYE-MAGIC LIGHT. A likely winner, in ERLA LEE. II., is uncovered in the seventh race, at one mile and an eighth. A consistent racer, no real danger is seen to prevent her from registering her third successive victory. HAWK EYE figures to have little trouble in earning the second place award. MAGIC LIGHT should be at a good price and a show ticket here would pay well.
