April 7.— S. II. Velie, c whose Blue Springs Farm in Missouri is t one of the largort breeding farms in that £ state, paid his firit visit in two years to C Churchill Downs this morning. He was -accompanied by Rush McCoy, who manages t his breeding and racing interests. Mr. Velie i came here direct from his farm, and after t visiting the local track, and meeting George J. Long. Dan Lchan. and other prominent • horsemen, departed for Lexington to inspect his horses in training at the track of the I Kentucky Association, in charge of J. Hazel- i wood. I Mr. Velie. during his visit here, spoke t must encouragingly of the outlook for the thoroughbred breeding industry in Missouri. I and reported that lie is having fine success at his farm, where As?agai. and the Irish stallion. Prince Phillip, are at the head of bis stud. Eleven of Mr. Velies mares have already foaled this season, and seven more ■ are due to foal shortly. All of the mares I bred las, season to Assagai have foaled ■ or are due to foal, while all but one of the I mares bred to Prince Phillip have foals. There are at pivsent fourteen good look- ; ing yearlings on the farm, these being about equally divided between the two stallions. I At the Lexington track Mr. Velie has a couple of Irish-bred three-year-olds. *hat he ! bought as weanlings and brought to this country. Believing that the pair would do better if they were not raced as two-year- ; olds. Mr. Velie did not send them to the races last year. The horses in question are The Begum II., gray filly, by Prince Phillip — Winnow, and Laudation, bay filly, by Prince Phillip — Laudatory. The latter mare is the dam of five winners, including Moss, which about a mouth ago won the Eclipse Stakes of 5,000 in India. Other horses that Mr. Velie has in training are Harpoon, two-year-old bay colt, by Assagai— Fairy Star, and Blue Daisy, two-year-old bay filly, by Assagai — Blue Cap. Both of these youngsters have shown exceptional speed in their training gallops. Jockey A. Pascuma. whose contract was recently secured by Alex Gordon, will report to thai trainer at Belmont Park April 20. Jockey S. Eidcn. who has been with Gordon for several seasons, will remain in Kentucky and ride under the direction of John P. Jones. H. L. Crain of Chicago, owner of a number of horses bing trained by Bob Rogers. is a recent arrival from Hot Springs, where lie had been following the close of the Jefferson Park meeting. F. J. Wieland is a recent arrival at Douglas Park with the horses Queer. Homewood, P.eechwood and J. J. Bambrick. The only horses that John Randolph has in training are Captain Applejack. Miles Tryor and Larky Mistake. Kinney Pitt is a recent arrival at Douglas Park with the borate Breast Plate. F.rla Lee II.. Isaac L., McKim and Talc-qua.
