1 1 ; 1 i TRAINING AT STANDSTILLS ♦ Few Horses Under Saddle at Ken- I tucky Association Course. H. L. Bilkers Col. Bob Gallops One Mile on SllpwiTy Track in 1:47:.:. — Showers with Col J Weather. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 7.— Showers, a muddy track and declining temperature v greeted horsemen here this morning, with « the result that training operations were greatly reduced and the preparation of the v comparatively few hovscs that .were sent C to the track carried out under exacting con- e t ditions. , The muddy footing developed during the night, and while it served as a damper I against standard or average morning train- ing, it was not near so annoying as the -j cold wind that whipped the frequent heavy t showers from the northwest. The showers continued throughout the day, and for the j first time in almost a week the afternoon schooling of young horses was called off. j Col. Bob. the good son of King Gorin — Armilda, which Col. R.. Baker has named j for the Kentucky Derby, braved the adverse elements and a slippery, well drenched track j to work a mile in 1 :47% handily under Carl c Disunion, accomplished without anything like j severe effort. The gallop was one of the ] most impressive of the current training sea- e son and stood as a worthy reward for the t few horsemen and "rail birds" who ventured , out to witness the performance of the well « made chestnut. , Breaking at the five-eighths post. Col. Bob was permitted to put but little effort into his running and went the half mile, f which included the famed "hill." in :52%. j He was timed in 1 :18% for three-quarters, and Dishmon retained his firm hold as he ] traversed the concluding quarter. .. Trainer Jim Baker expressed keen satis- . faction over the trial and intimated that t while Col. Bob has been well at home on a fast track, his manner of running in the prevailing mud this morning reflected excep- , tional ability under such conditions. Additional Derby hopefuls were among , others under saddle, but the Baker racer , was the only one to breeze. C. N. Jones ] Prince Bulbo, C. W. Moores Martie Flynn , and Lieutenant Mansfield and Mickey D. , were early visitors to the inside sand course. They galloped at a slow pace about a mile , each. The Oaks fillies Rejoice, Soiree, Elizabeth and Reveries Gal were among the horses to i breeze. Rejoice and Elizabeth were sent ] three-quarters each by trainer R. C. Frakes . and Soiree and Reveries Gal worked lightly , over five-eighths each. Consistent with the stables policy for , years, practically all of the horses in the , Gallaher and Combs establishment, which is trained by S. S. Combs, were required to Continued on twelfth page ,- . . 9 r - r ? - :. f - e :, -. 3 1 is s TRAINING AT STANDSTILL , j Continued from first page.i breeze over the muddy track. This stable e has been noted for its development of superior mud track performers and for regularity in training has no superior in this section. A. B. Gallaher was on hand to see the horses in action and reported the arrival last night at his nearby farm of a bay colt foal by Cherokee — Centre Shot. The latter , is the dam of the stake winners Pongee and . Little Sister and was a stake winner and . holder of the American track record of 1 and?% for a mie for eight years. Knight, local tobacco merchant and who formerly raced an extensive stable, has t but one horse in training. His lone handling 7 is Less K, which is in charge of W. C. Cioodloe. Mr. Knight was at the track this s morning. Jockey Willie Garner this morning an- !- nounced that if J. N. Camdc-n. his contract :t employer, has no starter in the Kentucky y 1 erby he will ride the Le Mar Stables s Misstep, one of the outstanding western-owned i- candidates for the coveted stake.
